Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many pounds (PSI) of air do the air tanks on a tractor normally hold?

Answer: 120 psi

Normally, after the air tanks get 120 psi in them you will hear a hiss of air, this is called the relief valve, if they get much more than 120 psi they just might burst!
2. What trademark name is sometimes used to refer to engine brakes?

Answer: Jake brake

If you're ever next to a big truck and the driver slows down by using the jake brake, you'll know it. (They are very loud) Many cities have laws against the use of jake brakes.
3. When hauling hazardous materials (gasoline, poisons, corrosive materials, etc.) What do you have to do every two hours or one hundred miles?

Answer: Stop and check your tires

One of the many laws regarding the transportation of hazardous materials are that you must stop and check your tires every 2 hours or 100 miles, whichever comes first.
4. How many hours are you allowed to drive in a 24 hour period without taking an 10 hour break?

Answer: 11

You can legally work 14 hours, however, you can only legally drive for 11 hours, the other three hours are for loading, unloading, breaks, etc.
5. You're driving your big rig down the road when you hear someone say on the CB, "There's an alligator in the road". What are they referring to?

Answer: A large piece of tire tread from a blown tire

The first time I heard this I was driving across interstate 80 in Iowa and I thought to myself "There are no alligators in Iowa!" (Pretty dumb, huh).
6. There are many different sizes of trailers but the most common size van trailers are 28ft, 48ft, and 53ft. What are 28ft trailers commonly referred to as?

Answer: pup trailers

Pup trailers are often pulled two at a time or, in designated areas, three at time. More than likely you've seen them going down the road.
7. You've just arrived at your final destination which in this case happens to be a grocery warehouse. They tell you that you must "fingerprint" your entire load. What does this mean?

Answer: You must hand unload it

Hand unloading or "fingerprinting" a load is never fun and usually takes all day.
8. What is a "diesel cop"?

Answer: Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer

Commercial Vehicle Enforcement or DOT officers are dedicated to ensuring that you and your commercial vehicle are safe for the road.
9. There are two air lines that connect from the tractor to the trailer, normally one is red and one is blue, what is the blue one for?

Answer: service brakes

Blue is for the service brakes, red is for the emergency brakes.
10. One last question, you're driving down the road when someone tells you on the CB "Your chicken coop has the big word out", what does this mean?

Answer: The weigh station is closed

It means the weigh station or "Chicken Coop" is closed. (Always a pleasant sight) If it is open, you better stop! Thanks for taking my quiz!
