Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Emergency medical technicians are most likely to ride in what type of vehicle?

Answer: Ambulance

Ambulances are typically stocked with equipment and tools, medicines and other ways to stabilize and provide emergency care to a person. Ambulances often respond to car crashes, fires, and medical calls. The primary job of an emergency medical technician is to provide triage and stabilize the patient enough to get them to the hospital.
2. Electrical linemen frequently work in trucks with what specialized piece of equipment attached that is used to stabilize them at great heights?

Answer: Bucket

Bucket trucks are used by electrical linemen, as well as people in several other professions. The bucket truck can be used by tree-trimmers, utility workers, window washers and more.

The truck is used to get a worker, or sometimes multiple workers, to an area high up, or far away from where the truck can get to. The pictured truck has an 80-foot reach when fully extended.
3. Often red or bright yellow, what kind of worker rides in trucks that normally have a ladder and a water tank?

Answer: Firefighters

Fire trucks, like those pictured, typically have ladders and a few hundred gallons of water on them as well as other equipment. The water reserve normally isn't enough to put out a fire, but it does allow for firefighters to get started while others find a hydrant to hook the truck up to. The tanks on the trucks pictures hold 500 gallons.
4. Sometimes with a big hook on the back, or other times a flatbed, what type of truck is used for transporting other vehicles?

Answer: Tow truck

The tow truck in this picture was specially decorated for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 2018. I edited out the company logos.

Tow trucks more traditionally have hooks or pads that are used to lift up a vehicle and pull it behind the larger truck. The one pictured is a flatbed truck. A vehicle is loaded onto the bed and transported. With a flatbed truck, there is less chance of hitting a pothole and causing damage to the car being towed.
5. What type of truck is used to pick up waste left at the curb?

Answer: Refuse hauler

A refuse hauler, or garbage truck, is the most common way that Americans dispose of their household waste. Some trucks have lifts that pick up cans and dump them into the truck (as pictured), while others still require manual loading of the waste into the truck.

Refuse haulers typically pick up trash in a neighborhood multiple times a month and take it to an area landfill or recycling center depending on what they picked up.
6. A hearse is typically driven by funeral home employees and used to move what?

Answer: Human remains

In America, after most funerals that have a body to be buried, the casket is loaded into a hearse and transported from a funeral home to the person's final resting place, typically a local cemetery.

There are also those who like driving the larger than normal vehicles and have bought older models to fix up and use. There are more than 100 "Hearse Clubs" across the U.S. where enthusiasts get together and show off their rides.

The photo attached here is from one of those meet-ups in Michigan.
7. Typically carrying a gun, handcuffs and other items that can be used to subdue a law-breaker, who rides in a car that often has lights, sirens and a cage in the back?

Answer: Police officers

There are hundreds, if not more, designs of police vehicles. The pictured one is a 2016 Ford Explorer with the "Police Package", meaning it has the light bar on the top, lights in the grill, is designed to go faster than the stock model and has other modifications.

It also has a cage in the back to keep criminals from reaching police officers if they are in the car.
8. Used to haul freight all over the world, what is the official name of the trucks and trailers that are sometimes called 18-wheelers?

Answer: Semi-trailer truck

Though it's often just referred to as a "semi" the official name for the truck and trailer combo is a semi-trailer truck. When not attached to a trailer, the truck portion can be known as a tractor, but never as a tractor truck.

These vehicles allow for more turning radius than that of the more rigid box truck, as the trailer can be removed and it attached via a fifth-wheel coupling or hitch.

The terminology used in this question refers to U.S. language. The truck/trailer combos have many different names internationally.
9. What can be attached to several types of trucks to turn them into snow removal machines?

Answer: Plow

A bright orange plow was added to a large dump truck in the photo. These trucks are used to plow roads in the U.S. The plow can be added or removed as needed. Typically when the plow is on the truck, another attachment is used on the back to turn the dump bed into a salt spreading unit. The salt spreading function is also used to help clear snow and ice from roads.
10. A tanker truck is the primary way that gold and silver bars are transported.

Answer: False

Tanker trucks are typically used to transport liquids and some gasses, not solid objects. Tanker trailers, as the truck is often similar to that of a tractor that could be attached to a Semi-trailer truck, is typically specially designed to hold whatever type of liquid or gas it is hauling. So the design and materials used to transport water would be vastly different than those used to haul gasoline or some other caustic liquid.
