Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the year 2004 over 880 trucks formed the worlds largest truck convoy in the USA?

Answer: True

On 18 September 2004, compassionate truck drivers formed 20 convoys, originating from 15 of the United States and in Alberta, Canada, and hit the road as part of the Worlds Largest Truck Convoy - officially recognized as such by Guinness World Records.

The convoy has thus far raised more than US$165,000 for the Special Olympics, and more than 880 trucks participated in the various events.
2. You have a 53' trailer with movable axles and a truck with adjustable 5th wheel. You load your trailer up with 46,000 lbs of widgets and head to the local truckstop to scale the load. You get the scale ticket and see that you have 11,680 lbs on your steering axle, 34,245 lbs on your drive axles, and 33,120 lbs on your trailer tandems. You know that you are only allowed 34,000 lbs on your drive axles and 34,000 lbs on your trailer tandem axles. You are also only allowed 12,000 lbs on your steer axle. What do you do?

Answer: Slide the trailer tandems forward.

Most modern trucks have slideable 5th wheels, but moving the 5th wheel to the rear will increase the weight on the drive axles. You could reload the trailer but it would make no sense as it would be much easier and faster to slide the trailer tandems forward a few holes.
3. In a class 8 truck there are two knobs. One is diamond shaped and yellow, the other is octagonal and red (stop sign). What is the yellow diamond shaped knob for?

Answer: Tractor parking brakes

The yellow knob which is a diamond shape is used to set the tractor parking brakes. The red knob that is octagonal shaped is used to supply or cut off the air supply to the trailer.
If you've heard a "PSHSH" noise when 18 wheelers are parking it is the parking brakes being set that you've just heard.
4. The air pressure in a typical air brake system is how many psi?

Answer: 120 psi

The average pressure is approximately 120 psi though I've seen it as high as 130 psi and as low as 100 psi.
5. What is ECM the acronym for?

Answer: Electronic Control Module

The ECM is the brains off the truck. It controls everything from the speed the truck is governed at to whether the engine will idle and for how long. Mechanics hook up a laptop computer to the ECM to make all the settings.
6. What is IFTA the acronym for?

Answer: International Fuel Tax Agreement

IFTA is an agreement among jurisdictions in Canada and the United States that simplifies the reporting by inter-jurisdictional carriers of motor fuel user taxes for diesel, gasoline, gasohol, propane and natural gas.
7. A truck driver tells you he has a 550 Cat engine. What does the 550 signify?

Answer: Horsepower rating

Automobile engines are designated by the displacement but engines in large trucks are designated by the horsepower rating. A 550 Cat engine can be set up to put out 550 horsepower and for those of you that are curious the displacement is 928 Cubic Inches (15.2L).
8. In 2005, under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), trucks can cross freely between the U.S.A and Canada with no need to provide Customs paperwork.

Answer: False

Truck Drivers must still provide paperwork to Customs officials. When crossing into Canada a Customs invoice must be provided to Canada Customs and when crossing from Canada into the U.S. an invoice must be provided as well as Inward Cargo Manifest. Crossing the border for truck drivers can be a very frustrating experience.

It can take anywhere from a few minutes to days to clear the load and get across the border. I cross the Canada/US border on a weekly basis and the best advice I can give drivers is to make sure you have all required paperwork and make sure it is neat and legible.
9. There are two air lines which attach to the trailer. One is blue and the other is red. What will happen if you are driving down the road and the blue air line disconnects?

Answer: You will have no trailer brakes

The blue line is called the service line and air flows through it to the trailer brakes when you make a brake application. The red line is called the emergency line and it keeps the trailer parking brakes released so you can move the trailer.
10. The "spike" is the pole on the rear deck which keeps the airlines and light cord from laying on the deck and developing rubs marks, cuts or bruising.

Answer: False

The "spike" is actually inside the cab of the truck and is used to apply the trailer brakes independently from the tractor. It is traditionally mounted on the steering column and looks like the shifter on automobiles, though on some new trucks it is mounted right on the dash.
