quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When you were much younger, you always went to the park on Saturday. Complete this sentence: "Cuándo eras niño, siempre ______ al parque el sábado."

Answer: ibas

Ibas is the 2nd person singular imperfect form of ir. Ir is one of only three irregular verbs in that tense. The others are ser (era) and ver (veía).
2. There is a construction using ir that means "to go away." Which of the following means just that?

Answer: irse

Irse is a reflexive verb, so you must put the pronoun before the conjugated verb form. "Me voy" means "I am going away," not "voyme."
3. Is there a form of ir in this sentence: Fui comunista antes de la invasión del Bay of Pigs.

Answer: No

The "fui" in this sentence does NOT come from ir. The sentence reads "I was a communist..." so fui is actually a form of ser, which means "to be." Tricky question.
4. You tell your mother on your phone that you have gone to the shop. So you say: "He ____ a la tienda."

Answer: ido

Strangely, ido, the participle of ir, is formed regularly. Yendo is the gerund form, voy is the yo present form, and yedo isn't a word.
5. Ir is irregular in the conditional tense but regular in the future tense.

Answer: False

Ir is regular in BOTH the future tense (iré, irás...) and conditional tense (iría, irías...).
6. Speaking of future tense, use the nosotros future form of ir to fill in this sentence: "Si ella vuelve, ________ a la casa de Roberto." ("If she returns, we will go to Robert's house.")

Answer: iremos

Iremos is formed regularly, by taking the infinitive and adding the six prescribed endings (-é, -ás, -á, -emos, -éis, -án) to it.
7. Which indicative form of ir would you use to form all the imperfect subjunctive forms of ir?

Answer: fueron

To form the imperfect subjunctive, take the ustedes form of the preterite tense (fueron), drop -on, and add the six preset endings (fuera, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an).
8. The form of ir in this sentence is in what mood: Deseo que mi abuela vaya a la playa conmigo. ("I want my grandmother to go to the beach with me.")

Answer: subjunctive

The subjunctive mood is used to express things that are not concrete, like a wish, doubt, or fear. It is a wish, but not a certainty that the speaker's grandmother will go with him.
9. "Ir a pie" is a construction meaning "to go by car."

Answer: False

Ir a pie actually means "to go by foot." To go by car is "ir a coche."
10. The "vamos a (infinitive)" construction means "let's (verb)." If this is true, "vamos a hacerlo" means "let's do it."

Answer: True

This is one of the most commonly used constructions of ir in all of the Spanish-speaking world.
