1. One of the world's tallest free standing structures is the Canadian National Tower in Toronto, Canada. In feet and inches, what is its exact height?

Answer: Sydney Opera House

Actually, Utzon resigned mid-way in disgust. It was then engineered to Utzon's design by Ove Arup. Bennelong Point used to be a streetcar depot before. It was named after the first governor's Aboriginal friend.

4. What has often been called the World's Longest Graveyard or the Wall of Tears?

Answer: The Great Wall of China

Legend says that Qin Shi Huang Ti who had it built was told by a wizard that the wall wouldn't stand unless 'wan' (meaning 10,000) were buried in it. The emperor found a man who was aptly named Wan, killed him and buried him instead. In fact it seemed many thousands had died in the task of building it across its treacherous terrain.
5. Phillipe de Commynes called it the world's most beautiful street. Vaporetti and Traghetti ply across it. The famous Rialto bridge crosses it and every year on Acension Day, a spectacular ceremony called the Spozalizio del Mar is held here. Name this place. There is a hint with it. Just fill the middle word.

Answer: Grand

The Grand Canal is the main artery of Venice and has only three bridges across it. In "The Stones of Venice" John Ruskin sang the praises of his wonder of the world.
6. This castle was built by Ludwig II of Bavaria after he was inspired by a performance of "Lohengrin" by Wagner, in 1861. Which castle is it?

Answer: Schloss Neuschwanstein

Ludwig was a mad-cap. He fantasised German legends and lived in a fool's world. He however did not live in his castle happily ever after. He was deposed just three months after its finish, considered unfit to rule. A large part of his fascination came from the Hohenschwangau where he spent his childhood.
7. Identify the structure: Height is 1250 feet or 381 metres. The television tower on the top makes it 1472 feet (449 m). It was originally planned for mooring airships at the top of the tower, but later the plan was abandoned. It is in a simple Art deco style. It was designed by Shreve, Harmon and Lamb.

Answer: The Empire State Building, New York

This building was also known as the Empty State Building during the Depression as it took 10 years to fill it. It has 10 million bricks, 2 million feet of electrical wiring and five acres of windows. Once a year, a marathon is held to the top across 1860 steps. Winning time: about 20 minutes. First suicide was in 1933.
8. The Taj Mahal has to be here in this quiz. Question is, what was the real name of Mumtaz, the favourite queen of Shah Jehan, who inspired him to create this wonder?

Answer: Arjumand Bano

Shah Jehan also built the famous Red Fort in Delhi. He copied the one in Agra built by his grandfather, Akbar the Great. Akbar built a city called Fatehpur Sikri near Agra which has the biggest doorway in the world, even today. It is said that Shah Jehan wasted all the wealth amassed by his forefathers for the purpose of governance in building beautiful monuments.

His son, Aurangzeb, was somewhat of a despot and imprisoned his father, usurping the throne.
9. Who had their own office on the second platform of the famous Eiffel Tower?

Answer: Le Figaro

The Eiffel Tower was designed by Alexander Gustave Eiffel. He also contributed some engineering for the famous Statue of Liberty. It was finished in 1889 for the Paris Exposition, in a span of just two Years. Eiffel and Company's head of research was Maurice Koechilin who was instrumental in the project.
10. The Colosseum of Rome! The name stuck due to the presence of a colossal statue very near to the venue. Whose statue was this - at least orginally?

Answer: Nero

It was Vespasian who built the stadium. In fact he beheaded the statue nearby and instead had the head of Apollo affixed in its place. The amphitheatre was also called the Flavian amphitheatre which seemed to be its original name.
