Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Perhaps the most famous address in literary history, 221B Baker Street, London, England was the home of which these noted characters?

Answer: Sherlock Holmes

In fact, 221B Baker St. never existed and does not exist even today. In 1932, when Baker St. was extended northward, the Abbey National Building Society moved into a large building covering 219-229 Baker Street. For many years, Abbey National employed a full-time secretary to answer mail addressed to "Sherlock Holmes".

The Sherlock Holmes Museum is actually situated between 237 and 241 Baker Street, further along the same stretch of road. For 15 years there was a dispute between Abbey National and the Holmes Museum for the right to receive mail addressed to "221B Baker Street". Since the closure of Abbey House in 2005, ownership of the address by the Holmes Museum has not been challenged despite it being as fictional as Holmes himself.
2. Paris is full of lovely and interesting landmarks. Which of these well-known Parisian sites can be found at the following address: 99, rue de Rivoli, Paris 75001?

Answer: Musée du Louvre

Maybe the greatest museum in the world, the Louvre is a multi-storied lovefest for art lovers everywhere. It holds everything from ancient Mesopotamian sculpture to High Renaissance paintings to pre-Impressionist sketches. If you don't get yourself lost in the Louvre, and you are still hungry to see more art, you may view the works of the Impressionists at the nearby Musée D'orsay!
3. Italy is home to a number of the world's most famous landmarks. Which type of structure can be found in the Italian town of Milano at the following address: Piazza della Scala, Milano 20121?

Answer: Theater

La Scala is arguably the world's most famous opera house, having been constructed following the design of Italian architect Giuseppe Piermarini in 1776. It stands on the site formerly occupied by the church Santa Maria alla Scala, hence the name.
4. For all lovers of very tall buildings, one of the key images embedded in our psyches is the outline of New York City's Empire State Building. This wonderful skyscraper can be found at the corner of 34th Street and which other major New York thoroughfare?

Answer: Fifth Avenue

At the corner of 34th and Fifth in New York City stands a building that has captured the imagination of millions of tourists over the past several decades. The Empire State Building was completed in 1931, becoming the tallest building in the world. It remained such for the next four decades, until finally surpassed by the World Trade Center. Several other buildings have surpassed the 102 story ESB in height, but it will never be surpassed in terms of its sentimental value.
5. Back to London, one of the most recognizable addresses in the world is 10 Downing Street. Which of the following individuals once called this very well-recognized address home?

Answer: Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher is one of a number of people who have lived at #10 Downing Street, it is the home address of the standing British Prime Minister. This has been the address of British Prime ministers since 1732 when the first British PM, Sir Robert Walpole, first took residence there at the behest of King George II. Living right next door at #11 Downing Street is the chief financial minister, known as the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
6. The most famous construct designed by world renowned architect Jørn Utzon, this structure was once called the 'Nun's Scrum' by Clive James. It stands at Bennelong Point in which of the following cities?

Answer: Sydney, Australia

The Sydney Opera House is one of the most recognizable buildings in the world, with its fascinating shell-like exterior. The building was completed in 1973 after a 14 year construction period and graces Sydney Harbor. The name 'Nun's Scrum' comes from the fact that the roof appears to look like a group of nuns' headgear, all huddled together as in a rugby scrum...how charming!
7. Due to the heavy traffic that moves along a one block stretch of this San Francisco street every day between Hyde and Leavenworth Streets, which zig-zag street would be a busy address to claim as one's own?

Answer: Lombard Street

Called the 'Crookedest Street in the World', the one-block stretch of Lombard Street between Hyde and Leavenworth would not be the ideal address, in my view. The street zig-zags down a very steep hill, and is one of the most thrilling attractions for drivers visiting San Francisco. I think driving it is kind of a waste, you have to wait about 45 minutes to an hour on the average day, and it only takes about 2 minutes to drive down the darn thing! I recommend to potential tourists that you walk to it, you'll get more satisfaction that way.

Incidentally, a section of nearby Filbert Street, between the same two cross-streets (Hyde and Leavenworth) is the steepest street in the United States with a 32% grade!
8. Film fans may be able to get the answer to this one. Which famous location in Chicago has the address 1060 West Addison Street?

Answer: Wrigley Field

Yes, fans of the 'Blues Brothers' everywhere smiled as they gently selected 'Wrigley Field', home of the Chicago Cubs. Elwood Blues, one of the title 'brothers', gives the police the Wrigley Field address as a way of keeping them off his back...he's a traffic menace, after all. Wrigley Field became the home of the Chicago Cubs in 1914, when it was called Weeghman Field, opening only two years after Boston's Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox.

It officially became Wrigley Field in 1926, after the new, sole owner of the Cubbies. One day Cubs fans...one day.
9. Which of these famous individuals once made his or her home at the following address: 263 Prinsengracht?

Answer: Anne Frank

Has anyone in the world not heard about the precocious young Jewish girl whose family hid away in a building along the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation of Holland? Her diaries are some of the most widely read in the world, and her legacy lives on in Amsterdam, where every day hundreds of people make their way into her family's 'secret annex'.
10. The President of the United States resides in the White House, located on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. But what is the specific address number of the White House, home of U.S. Presidents since John Adams?

Answer: 1600

The diagonal streets in the very well planned out U.S. capital are named after the states. The official address of the U.S. President is 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, be sure to send him your complaints! Also, be sure to send me your complaints, or compliments preferably...about this quiz. Thanks for playing!
