1. Swinburne University of Technology

Answer: Melbourne, Australia

Swinburne University of Technology was established in 1908 as a technical college by George Swinburne, with the purpose of enabling people in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne to have the opportunity to access tertiary education. It became a university in 1992, but maintains its focus on trades and certificated qualifications with its dual-sector status.

Voted the most livable city in the world numerous times, Melbourne is the ideal place to do my degree! Feted cartoonist Michael Leunig and athlete Alisa Camplin both attended Swinburne.
2. University of Massachusetts

Answer: Boston, USA

Established in 1964, the University of Massachusetts in Boston was created to answer the need in the local community for higher education. It subsumed Boston State College in 1982, and has continued to grow. Joseph P Kennedy II is a famous alumnus, as is former Boston mayor, Thomas Menino.
3. Pierre and Marie Curie University

Answer: Paris, France

Now in the family of Sorbonne universities, Pierre and Marie Curie University is still one of the top universities in France for all major science degrees. It is also France's largest scientific and medical education centre, and supports seven teaching hospitals.

Located on the Seine, this prestigious university is #131 in world rankings (2020), and one of the highest in research output.
4. Karolinska Institute

Answer: Stockholm, Sweden

Now, this is a place to do a degree. Since 1901, the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine have been selected by the Nobel Assembly at this university. It offers one of the widest ranges of courses in medicine and pharmacology in Sweden and across Europe. It partners with international organisations and other leading higher education universities.

Inventor of the 'tetra pak', Erik Wallenberg, is an alumnus of Karolinska Institute.
5. Northwestern University

Answer: Evanston, USA

Northwestern University was established in 1851 in Evanston Illinois, on the shores of Lake Michigan 12 miles north of Chicago. Its first buildings were finished in 1855, and it now includes additional campuses in Chicago and Doha, Qatar. Its world ranking in 2020 was #22; and its schools of education and engineering are well thought of.

6. McGill University

Answer: Montreal, Canada

This Quebec-based university came into being by virtue of a Royal Charter established in 1821 by King George IV. It was created on the foundations of the McGill College, established in 1813 thanks to a bequest by philanthropist and businessman James McGill.

It is a prestigious home of learning, and whilst it offers diplomas in over three hundred different fields of study, it also has the toughest acceptance standards of any university in Canada. Having said that, the university issued its first degree in 1833 and it can lay claim to issuing Canada's first degree in the field of medicine. With the main campus situated in Mount Royal (Montreal), it also provides facilities in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue.
7. Nanyang Technological University

Answer: Singapore

Nanyang lays claim to being the second oldest public autonomous research university in Singapore, and with a student population in excess of 33,000 students and an additional 10,000 faculty members, it claims to be Singapore's second largest university as well. Eight different colleges make up the campus, covering such diverse areas as engineering, science, humanities and social sciences.

It adds to its prestige by being the home to a number of autonomous institutions such as Singapore's National Institute of Education, the Earth Observatory of Singapore and the Institute on Asian Consumer Insight to name a few.
8. Edith Cowan University

Answer: Perth, Australia

The Edith Cowan University, or ECU, is an Australian university that was named after the first woman to be elected into the Australian parliament. Its history dates back to 1902, at which point it was called the Claremont Teacher's College, and it wasn't until 1991 that it was granted university status.

The main campus is situated in Joondalup and there are also sites at Mount Lawley (still in Perth) and a regional centre in Bunbury.
9. Imperial College

Answer: Kensington, UK

The Imperial College has its roots in an idea that was formed by Prince Albert in 1851. The concept became a reality by virtue of a Royal Charter and the Imperial College was established in 1907. This was done by merging the Royal College of Science, Royal School of Mines, and City and Guilds of London Institute to form a first class research facility. The Imperial College School of Medicine was added in 1988 and the Imperial College Business School in 2004. Whilst the main campus is in South Kensington (London) there is also an innovations campus set up in White City (London) and a rural research facility in Silwood Park (Berkshire).

Both author H.G Wells and lead guitarist of the rock band Queen, Brian May, attended Imperial College (May earned a PhD in astrophysics in 2007).
10. University of Côte d'Azur

Answer: Nice, France

The new kid on the block, this university was created as a result of decree number 2019-785 of 25 July 2019, and it is, primarily, a public scientific, cultural and professional experimental campus. It co-ordinates studies in conjunction with, among others, the Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur, the International Centre for Music Research and the Cannes and Marseille Schools of Actors.

Despite its infancy, by early 2020 it had nearly 30,000 students of which almost twenty percent were foreign students.
