Answer: Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday's badge has changed several times over the years, but has constantly featured an owl in some form or other. The owl first appeared on the badge in 1956. Although the club moved to Owlerton in 1899, this was not the reason for the nickname; Scottish footballer George Robertson had brought along a live owl as a mascot in 1912.

In fact, Wednesday were originally known as the Blades (due to Sheffield's association with the steel industry), which is now the nickname of rivals Sheffield United.

The club's mascot today are Ozzie and Barney Owl, while Ollie the Owl is Wednesday's representative for work with children in the community. (Sheffield, incidentally, does have a considerable owl population.)

Answer: Watford

The Hornets, or 'Orns as Watford fans call them, got their name from the yellow and black kit that was introduced in 1959. Watford had previously played in blue and white. Harry the Hornet appeared on the club badge in 1974, but he was later replaced by a hart, in homage to Watford's home county of Hertfordshire. (The county coat of arms features two harts.) 'Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting' is a song by Elton John, Watford's former chairman and arguably their most famous fan.

Answer: Huddersfield Town

The dog in the picture is a Yorkshire terrier, similar to the one on Huddersfield's badge. The nickname of the Terriers came about in 1969, as part of an effort by Club Promotion Officer Bill Brook to modernise the club's image. He was inspired by Skippy, a Yorkie owned by Huddersfield fan and sweet shop owner Colin Fisher, as Yorkshire terriers have a reputation for being fierce little animals with a fighting spirit. Skippy ended up being Huddersfield's first mascot.

The original terrier on the badge was red, but has since changed to yellow and is depicted sitting on top of the crest, holding a ball.

Answer: Newcastle United and Notts County

Both Newcastle and Notts County play in black-and-white striped kits, hence their nicknames of 'the Magpies' (or 'Mags' for short, in Newcastle's case). Both clubs have magpie mascots; Mr and Mrs Magpie for Notts County, and Monty Magpie for Newcastle. Notts County's badge features a pair of magpies, but Newcastle's has seahorses instead, representing Newcastle's connection with the sea (although past badges have featured magpies). Notts County's kit was also the inspiration for the kit of a far bigger team: Italy's Juventus.

Answer: Eagle

Palace were originally known as the Glaziers (and still are by some fans). The eagle first appeared on Crystal Palace's badge in 1973, inspired by Portugal's Benfica; it was the idea of Palace's eccentric manager Malcolm Allison, who also came up with the red-and-blue striped kit (itself inspired by Barcelona).

Instead of just having a bloke in a costume, Palace went one better than most clubs where mascots were concerned. Kayla, an American bald eagle like the one pictured, was introduced as club mascot in 2010.

She would fly around the pitch before matches, and allegedly once stole a pie from a Millwall fan. She also appeared on the cover of Kings of Leon's 'Only By the Night'.

Answer: Leicester City

Leicester City have a fox on their club badge, which first appeared in 1948. This is because of the city's association with fox hunting; a hunting horn has even been sounded on the pitch before kick-off at past games. The mascot of the club is Filbert Fox, named for Filbert Way, where the King Power Stadium is based. Gary Lineker, a native of Leicester and former player, is a huge fan and once presented 'Match of the Day' in his underwear after making a bet that he would do so if Leicester won the league in 2016.

Answer: Norwich City

Norwich City got their nickname from the practice of breeding canaries in the area. The club originally played in blue and white, but later changed their kit to the more familiar colours of green and yellow, to go with the nickname. The club badge features a canary sitting on a ball.

Celebrity chef Delia Smith is one of Norwich City's most famous fans and became a joint shareholder of the club with her husband Michael Wynn-Jones. Comedian and actor Stephen Fry has also been previously involved in the running of the club, as has politician Ed Balls.

Answer: Hartlepool United

The legend about Hartlepool and monkeys stated that during the Napoleonic Wars, the people of Hartlepool mistook a monkey washed up with a French ship for a French spy, as they had never seen a monkey before, and the poor animal was tried and hanged. Hartlepool United capitalised on the story and came up with the idea of H'Angus the monkey (say it out loud). Stuart Drummond, one of the men behind the mascot costume, was elected Mayor of Hartlepool in 2002 and campaigned on the pitch in the run-up to elections, promising 'free bananas' to children.

However, there are no monkeys on the club badge; instead, it features a hart as a reference to the city's name.

Answer: Derby County

Rammie the Ram was the first full-time mascot in English football and is so popular with Derby fans, there was even a DVD featuring him reading Aesop's fables in the Derbyshire countryside! He had a partner, Eweie, who was less popular. The Derby badge has featured a ram in some capacity since 1924; the association with rams comes from the First Regiment of Derby Militia, who had a ram as their mascot.

The club has also adopted a local folk song, 'The Derby Ram', as their anthem. There is a statue of the ram in Derby city centre.

Answer: Blackburn Rovers

The odd one out is Blackburn, who are merely nicknamed the Rovers. The other three clubs are all associated with felids. Hull City are nicknamed the Tigers due to their amber and black club colours and have a tiger's head on their badge; the suggestion that their name be changed to Hull City Tigers was met with much derision by fans. Millwall were originally named the Dockers, but changed their nickname to the Lions at the beginning of the 20th century after a headline dubbing them the 'Lions of the South'.

A lion has featured on the club badge since 1979 and the club's mascot, Zampa the Lion, is named for Zampa Road, home of Millwall's ground, the Den. Finally, the black cat in the photo is a reference to Sunderland, nicknamed the Black Cats.

Originally nicknamed the Rokerites after their old ground of Roker Park, their new nickname was chosen in 1997 after the club relocated to the Stadium of Light. The club have had a long association with black cats; a black cat lived in Roker Park during the 1900s and 1910s, and a young fan, Billy Morris, managed to sneak one into Wembley for the FA Cup final in 1937. Sunderland won the FA Cup that year.
