Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you want to travel US Highway 41 from its very beginning, what Michigan town would you start in?

Answer: Copper Harbor

US Highway 41 starts in Copper Harbor. Houghton and Marquette are along the way in Upper Michigan. Ironwood is the start of US Highway 51. Copper Harbor is the location of the ferry to Isle Royale, a National Park in the middle of Lake Superior.

The name comes from the fact that northern Michigan once had some of the largest copper mines in the world, and much of the copper ore was shipped from there.
2. Once you're in Wisconsin, US Highway 41 takes you through Green Bay, home of the Packers. Who is their home stadium named after?

Answer: Curly Lambeau

Lambeau Field, built in 1957, is named after legendary Packers coach Curly Lambeau. It was the first stadium built specifically for an NFL Team, at the cost of $960,000 (that is the correct number of zeroes). The renovation in 2003 cost $295 million.

Earl Louis Lambeau (1898-1965) coached the Green Bay Packers from 1921 to 1949. He won six NFL championships and had a record of 209-104-21. Lombardi was the legendary coach who led the Packers to multiple championships in the 1960s, including the first two Superbowls. Lambeau Field is located on Lombardi Drive. Landry coached the Dallas Cowboys, the hated rivals of the Packers.
3. As you head south through Chicago on US Highway 41, what would be the last museum you would drive by?

Answer: Museum of Science and Industry

You would pass them in this order: Historical Society (Lincoln Park), Art Institute (Columbus and Adams), Field Museum (Museum complex near Balbo) and the Science and Industry Museum (59th Street in Hyde Park).

The Museum of Science and Industry was originally built as the Palace of Fine Arts during the Columbian Exposition of 1893. It was opened as a museum in 1933. One of its biggest exhibits is a captured U-Boat from World War II, over 200 feet long.
4. When traveling through Indiana on US Highway 41, you'll pass a National Historic Park dedicated to what famous resident of Indiana?

Answer: George Rogers Clark

The George Rogers Clark National Historic Park is in Vincennes, near the site of a Revolutionary War victory by Colonel Clark. On February 25, 1779, Clark surrounded Fort Sackville and forced the surrender of the British troops inside. It was a key victory along the war's western frontier. And yes, George Rogers Clark was related to William Clark of Lewis and Clark fame; he was his older brother.

Highway 41 does pass through Terre Haute, near Debs' home, which is a state historic site. Lincoln's boyhood home in Lincoln City is about thirty miles east of US 41. New Harmony, the Utopian community founded by Owen, is about thirty miles west of US 41.
5. As you drive on US 41 through Kentucky, you pass through Hopkinsville. Fans of what sport get the majority of their equipment from Hopkinsville?

Answer: Bowling

Hopkinsville is home to Ebonite International, which manufactures 98 percent of the world's bowling balls. Bowling balls include the Magic, Clash and Tornado styles. One of their stranger bowling balls contains a crystal skull.
6. As you near Chattanooga, US 41 passes the site of Chickamauga National Military Park. Who was the Confederate general that won the September 1863 battle?

Answer: Braxton Bragg

Braxton Bragg, one of the most maligned Confederate Generals, was successful in preventing Union forces from capturing Chattanooga... for a time, anyway. In November 1863, Chattanooga fell to Generals Hooker and Sherman. Rosecrans was Bragg's opponent in September.

Bragg (1817-1876) was a graduate of West Point who fought in the Seminole and Mexican Wars before retiring in 1855. He returned to command armies in Louisiana, Georgia and Tennessee for the CSA. Bragg was known as a disciplinarian and stickler for rules. Fort Bragg, the US Army base in North Carolina, is named after him.
7. As you drive through Atlanta on US 41, which of these landmarks will you come closest to?

Answer: Georgia Dome

US 41 runs directly adjacent to the Georgia Dome, home to the Atlanta Falcons and one of the sites of the 1996 Olympics. The Georgia Dome has hosted numerous major events, including several Superbowls and bowl games. Between 1992 and 1999, it was the largest domed structure in the world. The other three landmarks are in downtown Atlanta.
8. As you take US 41 through Macon, you'll pass the Ocmulgee National Monument. What is it a monument to?

Answer: Native American culture

Ocmulgee is one of the most important archeological sites in the eastern United States. Digs were first conducted by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s. There is evidence of humans dating back 10,000 years. Ocmulgee is a key Mississippian cultural site, with evidence of a very complex building culture between 950 and 1150 AD.
9. As you drive down US 41 between Naples and Miami in Florida, what type of "alley" are you passing through?

Answer: alligator

In southern Florida, US Highway 41 passes through Big Cypress National Preserve and directly north of Everglades National Park. Officially, "Alligator Alley" is a section of Interstate 75. US 41 runs roughly twenty miles south of I-75. The section of US 41 between Naples and Miami is known as the Tamiami Trail. Since there are no barriers, the odds of seeing an alligator are actually greater than when traveling on I-75.
10. After traveling 2000 miles, where in Florida does US Highway 41 finally wind up?

Answer: Miami

US Highway 41 ends in Miami, at the intersection of Seventh and Brickell, just south of the Miami River. Before 1999, US 41 included the MacArthur Causeway into Miami Beach and the short section of Florida A1A there.

Miami is one of the largest cites in the United States. It is probably best known for electoral disputes and Cuban immigrants. The city had a resurgence in the 1980s with the popularity of the police drama "Miami Vice". Personal note: Avoid the Miami-Dade jail if you can. Lousy food and very rude staff.
