You are in Providence, home to the state capitol. It takes up much of northern Rhode Island. It was first created in 1703. Rhode Island only has three counties: Providence, Kent and Washington. There is a city of Bristol, but the county of Bristol is in neighboring Massachusetts. Providence is home to a large number of colleges, including Brown, a member of the Ivy League. US 6 only goes 26 miles through Rhode Island. Much of that is in Providence and its surrounding suburbs. You pass fairly close to Jerimoth Hill, the highest point in the state (all 812 feet of it) before reaching the border near Quandock. Jerimoth Hill is about four miles north of US Hwy 6.

Mount Washington, at 6288 feet, is the highest point in New England. There are several ways up Mount Washington, most of them expensive. Walking up is an option, but it takes around 5 hours. There is a cog railway, which was built in 1869. Mount Washington is in the Guinness Book as the "windiest place on Earth" with a record wind of 231 MPH; winds at the top can often get over 150 MPH. Mount Katahdin (5268 feet) marks the end of the Apalachian trail in Maine. Mount Marcy (5344 feet) is the highest point in the state of New York. Mount Greylock (3491 feet) is the highest spot in Massachusetts. US 2 has a very short run through New Hampshire, only around 35 miles. It goes between Shelburne and Lancaster. You do cross the Appalachian Trail near Gorham and pass by Santa's Village near Jefferson.

Broad Street runs straight for thirteen miles, from the Navy Yard and the stadiums deep in South Philadelphia to the edge of Montgomery County at the city's northern edge. It bisects the city between its two major rivers, the Delaware and the Schuylkill, taking a minor detour around the massive City Hall complex in center city at Market Street. Broad Street is noted for its annual ten mile run, which starts at Central High School in the north and finishes inside the Navy Yard. In 2007 Patrick Cheruiyot set a record for the fastest ten mile time ever recorded in the USA; 45 minutes, fourteen seconds. The speed of the straight, slight downhill, smooth surface course makes it extremely popular among elite distance runners. Broad Street also encompasses Philadelphia's main theater and classical music venues in center city and runs through Temple University in North Philadelphia.
