Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did the Incas call their empire?

Answer: Tahuantinsuyo

Meaning 'The four corners of the world'.
2. Who is the mythical founder of the Incas?

Answer: Manco Capac

It is said that around the beginning of the second century, Manco Capac, accompanied by his three brothers and four sisters, led ten Inca clans to the valley of Cuzco. After conquering the native tribesmen there, he then made Cuzco the Inca capital.
3. In what year was Machu Picchu discovered?

Answer: 1911

As the Incas had hoped, it was not discovered by the Spanish conquistadors. However for some unknown reason, the city was abandoned, and stayed that way for over 300 years until American explorer Hiram Bingham came across it by chance.
4. What was the name of the Inca's beer?

Answer: Chicha

It was commonly made from fermented maize.
5. What did Incas do with Guinea Pigs?

Answer: Eat them and sacrifice them

They ran around inside the house and were fed on plants and kitchen scraps.
6. What was the name of the flutes used by the Incas?

Answer: Quena

It consisted of a notched end-blown flute with up to six finger holes plus the thumb hole. It produces a unique resonant sound, and is still played commonly today.
7. What was the title given to an Inca queen?

Answer: Coya

She was important in regard to local ceremonies, and could even take over from her husband if he was indisposed. As the emperor himself was representative of the sun, his wife was representative of the moon.
8. What is 'Inti Raymi'?

Answer: Festival of the sun

Still performed in Cuzco, it was one of the principal events in the religious calender.
9. According to most sources, with how many men did Pizarro land on the north coast of Peru?

Answer: 180

Precise figures vary, but all agree it was fewer than 200. This event marked the end of the Incas. Like the Aztecs, they first believed the Spanish invaders to be Gods, but the Spanish cared for nothing but gold. Although the Incas fought bravely, it was the advanced Spanish weapons that proved the difference.
10. What was the main vegetable used by the Incas?

Answer: Potato

People of the Andean region are responsible for the development of many of the vegetables you and me enjoy (mostly!) every day, among these being almost 250 different varieties of potato! Thanks for playing!
