Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is 'il nonno' in English?

Answer: grandfather

The Italian for 'grandmother' is 'la nonna'. 'Godfather' is 'il padrino', 'father-in-law' is 'il suocero', and 'cousin' is 'il cugino'. To make all these feminine, the article must change from 'il' to 'la' and the ending must change from 'o' to 'a'.
2. The Italian word 'il nipote' has two possible meanings in English. What are they?

Answer: grandson and nephew

'Il nipote' becomes 'la nipote' in the feminine. 'Brother' is 'il fratello', 'great-grandfather' is 'il bisnonno', and 'daughter' is 'la figlia'.
3. What is 'la matrigna' in English?

Answer: step-mother

'Nanny' is 'la tata', 'aunt' is 'la zia', and 'godmother' is 'la padrina'. The Italian for step-father is 'il patrigno'.
4. What is 'il cognato' in English?

Answer: brother-in-law

'La cognata' is the female equivalent. 'Half-brother' is 'il fratellastro'.
5. What is 'bisnonna' in English?

Answer: great-grandmother

The word 'bis' means 'encore' or 'again'.
6. Let's turn it around and answer the next five questions from the English point of view. What is the Italian word for 'baby'?

Answer: il neonato

There are other words for 'baby' which include 'il bambino' but 'il neonato' refers to the baby being recently born. 'I gemelli identici' are 'identical twins', 'la figlioccia' is a 'female godchild' and 'la madrina' is 'godmother'.
7. How do Italians refer to 'elder brother'?

Answer: il fratello maggiore

'Il fratello minore' is 'a younger brother' and I included 'il figlio' (son) as a red herring!
8. What is 'uncle' in Italian?

Answer: lo zio

'Lo zio' is an interesting noun because it needs the 'lo' article which is used before certain words including 'z' and 's' plus a consonant, e.g. 'lo specchio' (mirror). 'Il genero' is 'son-in-law'. 'Oncle' is the French word for uncle.
9. How do Italians refer to 'daughter-in-law'?

Answer: la nuora

'La sorellastra' is 'half-sister', 'la figlia' is 'daughter' and 'la gemella' is 'female twin'.
10. What might an Italian child call his/her father?

Answer: Papà (babbo or padre)

'Nonno', as I have already mentioned, is 'grandfather', 'bimbo' is an informal word for a small child, a shortened form of 'bambino' and 'daddy' is an English word. Alternatively a child might refer to his/her father as 'babbo' which also features in 'Babbo Natale' -'Father Christmas'. I hope you've enjoyed this quiz, thanks for playing!
