Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Welcome, Recruit. Time for your first lesson. Your (male) Platoon Commander asks if you are ready for training. You reply with the appropriate compliment, "Yes..." what?

Answer: Sir

It is polite to refer to anyone as "Sir", however any Officer in the Australian Army should be respectfully referred to as "Sir". If your Commander is female, the correct response would be "Ma'am".
2. Ok Recruit, it's time to collect your equipment. Which item would you most need to survive in the field?

Answer: Canteen

While the other options may be useful, a canteen full of water is vital to ensure you are well hydrated at all times.
3. You're looking a little tubby, Recruit; what should you do to make sure you're fit to join the Army?

Answer: All of these

Each of these drills works a different part of the body, and to promote good health and fitness, all should be applied.
4. Okay Soldier, you are ready to start using weapons. You've been given a rifle at a shooting range and it's your turn to impress. What should you concentrate on the most to ensure you are highly accurate?

Answer: your breathing

Breathing is essential for accuracy. Soldiers are taught how to breathe when shooting to ensure each shot lands exactly where it was intended.
5. Private, it seems you have not been paying attention to your ironing. Your punishment is to clean the toilets at 1430 hours. What time will you report for duty?

Answer: 2:30 p.m.

The twenty-four hour clock is used so as to avoid confusion in timings. This can become very important in situations in which time is critical and in protocol.
6. It's time for a break, relax and enjoy some lunch. Where will you report to?

Answer: The Mess

The Mess provides meals to all the soldiers and is a welcome place to relax and unwind, particularly after a hard day's work.
7. MAN DOWN, MAN DOWN! One of your mates has been shot in the chest! Luckily you were taught First Aid during your training. What is the first thing you should do?

Answer: Ensure the safety of yourself and your mate

You must ensure that everyone is safe before you can commence treatment. It is no good having more then one injured soldier.
8. Which medal is the greatest honour (as recognised by the British Commonwealth)?

Answer: Victoria Cross

The Victoria Cross is the highest award offered in the British Commonwealth.
9. Due to your outstanding service, you have been promoted. You now have two 'hooks' on your arm. Which rank have you been promoted to?

Answer: Corporal

A Corporal always has two 'V-shaped' patches also known as 'hooks' to indicate his/her rank.
10. Well the time has come to assess your suitability to the Australian Army. Which of these people could make a suitable soldier?

Answer: All these people could make suitable soldiers

The Army is made up of a diverse group of people. The important factors in a soldier are his/her ability to perform the duty they were hired for, just like any other job. A certain degree of fitness is certainly required, but a short period in a detention centre aged 15 will not necessarily be a bar, if other evidence is supportive. I hope you found my quiz enjoyable and a little informative. :)
