Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Ontario, Canada, it is illegal to sell edible underwear in an 'Adult Entertainment' store unless you have what?

Answer: A food license

Anything edible requires a food license in Ontario and items have to be in accordance with the food and drug requirements and laws. Submitted by KittyKatey
2. According to an ancient law which survived well into the twenty-first century, in the English city of York it was legal to kill a Scotsman within the city walls but only if he was what?

Answer: Carrying a bow and arrow

The "law" about being allowed to kill a Scotsman carrying a bow and arrow in York is one of those ancient British regulations that have been superceded by Parliamentary legisation, but still survive in statute. Clearly, laws against murder would take precedence in a modern court. Submitted by scotsbluebell.
3. In Australia it is illegal to walk on the right side of the footpath / pavement. True or False?

Answer: True

It is still a subject that is debated both in the news and local councils. The idea sprung from the fact that one drives on the left hand side, therefore a walker should walk on the left hand side. It has even been suggested that foreigners are influencing the public to not keep to the left hand side. To walk on the right side of a footpath is a finable offence. Submitted by ClaudiaCat.
4. In Virginia, in which of the following locations is it illegal to park your car?

Answer: On the railroad tracks

Believe it or not this is an actual law! I wonder how many people have been arrested for this infraction. It is interesting to think of how many people actually did this for a law to be made. Submitted by Shedrgn13.
5. In Singapore, you could in theory be fined for walking around naked in the privacy of your own home. True or false?

Answer: True

There's a lot of reasons to be fined or arrested for in Singapore; walking nude in the house could in theory get you a $1000 fine. Be sure that if you were to do the latter, have the curtains or blinds ready for as long a neighbour catches you, they have right to call the cops under the 'Public Law and Nuisance Act.' Also, not flushing a toilet is an offense. If a policeman catches you for not flushing, you'll have to pay $500, so clean up the john before leaving! Submitted by Abby_91.
6. Clint Eastwood is a terrific actor, and has also served as Mayor of Carmel (1986 -1988), California. During this era (and continuing today) this lovely sea-side city instituted a ban on what?

Answer: Wearing high heeled shoes

More than 2 inch heels are a "no-no" in this city due to concerns with lawsuits involving the city's uneven cobblestone streets. (According to gossip, ladies can get a free "High Heel Permit" at City Hall. Remind me to apply for one next time I visit!) By the way...who could possibly have an unnamed llama - it makes me sad even to think about it. Submitted by jinxgirl.
7. In Cambodia, a criminal once used a child's water gun to spray gasoline and thus commit arson, which led to such weapons being banned in the country. Is this true or false?

Answer: False

The water gun is indeed banned in Cambodia, but for another reason. Apparently, a delinquent filled up a couple of these said guns with somewhat less than hygienic liquid bodily waste and fired it at unsuspecting victims. As you can tell from the law, the Cambodian government wasn't too happy about this, and owning one will lead you getting fined and the gun confiscated. Submitted by Abby_91.
8. Gainsville, GA is proud of its poultry industry. In 1961, a by-law was passed to ensure fried chicken was eaten with what?

Answer: Fingers

Gainsville introduced a city ordinance requiring that chicken be eaten with your fingers as a publicity stunt to promote Gainsville as the poultry capital of the USA. According to local press reports, a 91-year old grandmother was once issued a ticket because she used a knife and fork - but the sheriff immediately rescinded her fine. Submitted by jinxgirl.
9. In which country in Britain is there a law that if someone knocks on your door and wants to use the toilet, you must let them?

Answer: Scotland

Although strictly speaking there is not a Statute saying that you must let a person into your house to use the toilet, there is a Common Law precedent. Trespass is one part of Tort Law where you are not allowed to enter or interfere with another person's property.

In Scotland everyone has the right of Trespass; probably coming from the remoteness of the land where to get from one place to another you would most likely have to travel through someone else's property. Submitted by milkypoy.
10. Finally, coming right up to date, what is not allowed to be done under a specific 1998 Act in the United Kingdom?

Answer: Detonation of a nuclear weapon

It is illegal under the terms of the Nuclear Explosions (Prohibition and Inspections) Act 1998 to cause a nuclear explosion or detonate a nuclear weapon. Forgive me if I say that this is a case of stating the obvious! Submitted by lonely-lady.
