Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How long is the carferry Badger?

Answer: 410 feet

She is about the same length as one and a half football fields.
2. In addition to holding 180 autos on two car decks, the Badger can also accomodate how many passengers?

Answer: 620

On a given day with near full or full capacity, crew members come into direct contact with over 1,200 passengers!
3. The "Badger" started service in 1953. She is not powered by diesel, like many modern ships. What kind of fuel does she use?

Answer: Coal

She is the oldest coal burning ship on the Great Lakes, and the largest one in the world.
4. How many crew members does it take per crossing to run the ship?

Answer: 60

The crew is comprised of the auto attendants who load and unload cars, ticket agents, reservationists, pursers, engineers, navigation deck personnel, entertainers, housekeepers, customer service associates, and many others. I myself am a purser, reservationist, and check-in agent.
5. And now on to the part of the show where we get asked really odd questions. First off, is it better to look for the dolphins jumping off the right side of the bow, or the left side?

Answer: Neither one

Hello! Lake Michigan is part of the Great Lakes...freshwater. There won't be many salt-water dwelling dolphins in the lakes! The bow being the front of the ship, the left side is called the port, and the right side is called starboard.
6. Has the ship ever sunk before?

Answer: No

There have been a few times when she did hit something that made her take on water, but she has never totally gone down. If she did, chances are that she wouldn't be sailing today!
7. How much are your perennial vegetable seeds?

Answer: We don't sell them

Yes, this question has come across us before. However, this is a cross-lake carferry. We don't deal with horticulture.
8. How many ghosts reside onboard the ship?

Answer: 3

One is of a stoker in the engine room, one is of a cook in the galley on the upper deck, and one is of an elderly woman in one of the staterooms. Spooky things have been reported by both passengers and crew alike. None of which have been substantiated though. It's just fun to speculate.
9. The Badger is painted two colors. What are they?

Answer: Black and White

Her hull is black, with a white superstructure. It takes a lot to keep the white clean from the black smoke.
10. How big is the biggest vehicle that sailed across?

Answer: A 250 foot long oversize load

The Badger was built to hold 40 railroad cars, and has no problem with cars, vans, trucks, SUVs, 5th wheels, campers, trailers, semis, motor coaches, oversize loads, potato pickers (weird looking things) and many other kinds of autos. However, she can't fit a space shuttle transport.
