Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It's early in the morning and I wake up with a fright because I can hear "die honde blaf". What is it that I heard?

Answer: The dogs barking

"Die" means the, "Honde" means dogs and "Blaf" means bark or barking. So the whole phrase is "the dogs bark".
2. I go downstairs because I realise that "Ek is dors". What is it that I realise?

Answer: I am thirsty

"Ek" means I, "is" means is and "dors" means thirsty.
3. I guess now that I am awake, I may as well make breakfast but I realise that I am out of "eiers en brood". What have I run out of?

Answer: Eggs and bread

"Eiers" means eggs and "brood" means bread.
4. I suppose "Ek moet winkel toe gaan". What have I decided to do?

Answer: I must go to the shop

A direct translation of that sentence would be "I must shop to go". The verb is at the end of the sentence. As a result we cannot translate directly from Afrikaans to English. So the sentence "Ek moet winkel toe gaan" is translated to "I must go to the shop"
5. Before I can go to the shop, I must "gaan stort". What must I do?

Answer: take a shower

"Gaan stort" means to take a shower. "Gaan" also means go.
6. Just as I am ready to leave, I trip over a "skaatsplank" that my son left lying around. What did I just trip over?

Answer: Skateboard

"Skaats" means skates and "plank" could mean either plank or board but in this case it means board. Many Afrikaans words have more than one meaning. Sometimes you have to listen to the whole sentence to figure out the meaning of certain words.
7. I get up from the floor and realise that "my kop is seer". What is wrong now?

Answer: My head is sore

"My" means my and is pronounced 'may',"kop" means head and "seer" means sore. So the sentence means "My head is sore".
8. The commotion causes my husband and children to wake up and they say, "Ons is honger". What do they say?

Answer: We are hungry!

"Ons is Honger" means we are hungry. "Ons" means we or us, "is" means is or are and "honger" means hungry.
9. I tell them all what happened and everyone thinks that my story is "baie snaaks". What do they think of my story?

Answer: Very funny

"Baie" means very and "snaaks" means funny, humorous or amusing.
10. We decide to go out for breakfast, but as we leave the house we realise that is only "Half drie" in the morning. What time is it?

Answer: Half past two

"Half" means half and "Drie" mean three. This means it is a half an hour before three o'clock which would make it half past two.
