Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Oh dear, I've forgotten what "good morning" is in Afrikaans. Can you help me by selecting the correct answer below?

Answer: Goeie More

There is actually supposed to be a ^ on top of the o, so it is actually pronounced more - a.
2. Now that I've said good morning to everyone, it's time to eat breakfast. I think that would be "ontbyt" in Afrikaans; am I correct?

Answer: Yes

Yes I am! Supper would be "aandete" in Afrikaans.
3. Now it's time to get dressed, I put on my "rooi T-hemp", my "blou broek" and my "swart skoene". What did I just put on to wear?

Answer: Red T-shirt, blue trousers and black shoes.

"Rooi" means red and "T-hemp" means T-shirt which ends up as red T-shirt. "Blou" means blue and "broek" means pants or trousers, ending up as blue pants/trousers. Lastly, "swart" means black and "skoene" means shoes ending up as black shoes.
4. Now I know that I must go somewhere, but where? I glance at the calendar and it says "gaan winkel toe en koop 'n potlood." What does that mean?

Answer: Go to the shop and buy a pencil.

A "winkel" is a shop, to "koop" is to buy and " 'n potlood" is a pencil.
5. Now, I glance at my watch and it says "half-twee" What is the time?

Answer: Half past one (1:30)

"Twee" means two, so it can get confusing when you say "half-twee", but it actually means half past one (or halfway to "two").
6. After I finally figure out what time it is, I realize that it's time to fetch my daughter from school; she is in grade 1 (1st grade). I get to the school, but I don't know where to find her. Then I see a kind looking lady, but oh no! She can only speak Afrikaans. How will I ask her where to find the grade 1 classes?

Answer: Waar is die graad een klasse?

You could also ask "Waar is die graad een kinders?". "Kinders" means "children".
7. Now I take my daughter home and luckily, she has no "tuiswerk". What doesn't she have?

Answer: Homework

Yes she has no homework, lucky girl! Most words in Afrikaans that begin with "tuis" have something to do with home. The equivalent Dutch word is "huiswerk".
8. Now it's time time for the next stage of the day. I go into the "badkamer". What can I do in there?

Answer: Bath my daughter.

The "badkamer" is the bathroom of course! (kamer = room and bad = bath)
9. Now it's time to have our supper. I cooked up some "rys" and some "vleis". What are we having to eat?

Answer: Rice and meat.

"Vleis" is meat and "rys" is rice.
10. Finally, time for bed, after such a long day! First I put my daughter to bed and then I hop into bed. What am I going to be doing in my bed?

Answer: Slaap

"Slaap" is sleep and after such a busy day, I think I'm going to need to sleep. The other options mean "sing", "eat" and "laugh".
