Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Around the world, in 2010 approximately how many people belong to Lions Clubs?

Answer: 1,300,000

There are around 1.3 million members in 205 countries around the world. Members work in their communities to provide assistance to those in need, and fundraise for various causes.
2. You have to be a member of a church to belong to a Lions Club.

Answer: False

Lions is the largest non-religious organisation in the world. Part of the Lions Ethics statement includes the words "partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be discussed".
3. Which of the following would NOT be an activity Lions might undertake?

Answer: Handing out political information at a polling booth

the Lions Code of Ethics does not allow club members to take part in party political activities as Lions. What one does as an individual is one's own business, but Lions clothing or badges must not be worn at the time.
4. Where and when was the Lions organisation started?

Answer: USA 1917

Lions was started by an American businessman, Melvin Jones, who wanted to give back something to his community. "Melvin Jones Fellowships" are now awarded to Lions who achieve at a high level.
5. Several of Lions Clubs' many projects involve the issue of sight - the recycling of spectacles, vision screening, eye banks etc. Who first inspired Lions to take on projects in this area in 1925?

Answer: Helen Keller

Helen Keller addressed a Lions Convention in USA in 1925, where she challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness."

Since then, almost every country where Lions exist runs some kind of "Save Sight" program.
6. The name "Lions" was chosen by the founder because he felt the lion stood for courage, strength, fidelity and vital action.

Answer: True

Melvin Jones chose the name for that reason, and in 1919, when there was an attempt to change the name, a member spoke against the change in the following words:
"The name Lions stands not only for fraternity, good fellowship, strength of character and purpose, but above all, its combination of L-I-O-N-S heralds to the country the true meaning of citizenship: LIBERTY, INTELLIGENCE, OUR NATION'S SAFETY."
7. What is the motto of Lions Clubs International?

Answer: We Serve

All the choices listed are things that Lions do, but the actual motto is "We Serve" - meaning we serve our country, our community or those less well off than ourselves. Having been on quite a few service activities, I can assure you that having fun is certainly part of being a Lion.
8. Approximately how many children from around the world participated in the Lions Peace Poster competition since it began in 1990?

Answer: 4,000,000

That's right - 4 million! Clubs sponsor the project in schools in their community, and winners are chosen from each Lions District. Students aged from 11 - 13 are eligible to enter, and the ultimate winner goes to an awards ceremony at the United Nations on Lions Day.
9. There is a Lions project called The Christmas Ship.

Answer: True

The Christmas Ship is sponsored and organised by Lions Clubs in Washington State and British Columbia and brings gifts to children and seniors living on remote islands off the coast of Bellingham, Washington USA and British Columbia, Canada. Lions dress up as pirates, elves, clowns and Santa, and distribute more than 800 gifts, as well as visiting the elderly or housebound of the islands.
10. Another Lions project is titled "Peace Village". In what country is this village located?

Answer: Germany

Peace Village brings together children from all over the world who have been injured and who need specialised medical attention to recover. Up to 300 children live at the village at a time, and suffer from many conditions including burns, loss of limbs and infections. Since 1967, Peace Village has treated over 42,000 children.
