In the 1972 election the initial Democratic VP candidate, Thomas Eagleton, admitted having received shock treatments at a mental hospital and was replaced with Sargent Shriver by Democratic Presidential candidate George McGovern. Another first in the 1972 election: The first Electoral College vote won by a woman was cast for Tonie Nathan (VP candidate of the Libertarian Party). Nixon's VP Spiro Agnew (first elected in 1968) was accused of taking bribes while in office and resigned in 1973 after pleading nolo contendre (no contest) to the charge. Gerald Ford was appointed by Nixon to take his place as VP.

After the Watergate scandal broke in 1973, Nixon resigned and VP Ford was elevated to the Presidency. During the election George Wallace survived an assassination attempt that left him partially paralyzed while campaigning for the Democratic Presidential nomination.

In 1968, Wallace was the presidential candidate of the American Independent Party.

As the camera moves in closer and closer on the girl's face, an atomic bomb explodes and the viewer sees a reflection of a mushroom cloud in her eye. Although Goldwater was never named in the ad, the implication was he might use atomic weapons.

The ad was shown only once during the campaign after it generated many bipartisan protests. (It has been shown many times since.) Goldwater's campaign slogan was 'In your heart you know he's right.' Johnson countered with 'In your guts you know he's nuts!'
