Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which is the only state that voted Democratic in all seven presidential elections from 1980 to 2004?

Answer: Minnesota

Minnesota, along with Washington DC, went Democratic in every election. New York and Massachusetts went Republican in 1980 and '84. Hawaii went Republican in 1984.
2. In the twelve presidential elections from 1960 to 2004, did California vote more often for the Democrat or the Republican?

Answer: Republican

California only voted Democratic five times: 1964, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004.
3. Before Joe Biden in 2020, which of these four was the last Democratic presidential candidate to win Georgia?

Answer: Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton won Georgia in his first race in 1992. He was the first Democrat to win Georgia since favorite son Jimmy Carter was on the ballot.
4. Eight presidential candidates are shown below: which two won 49 states?

Answer: Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan

Nixon in 1972 won every state except Massachusetts (and non-state Washington D.C.); Reagan in 1984 won every state except Minnesota (and Washington D.C.). George Washington (both terms) and James Monroe in 1820 actually won every state, but there were far fewer states back then. Franklin Roosevelt, in 1936, won 46 states, which was every state, at that time, except Maine and Vermont.
5. Which of the following was the last third party presidential candidate to win a state?

Answer: George Wallace

In the 1968 election, George Wallace, running under the American Independent Party banner, won five states: Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. Earlier, in 1948, Strom Thurmond won Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and South Carolina.
6. Which of these four states did NOT vote for the Republican in every presidential election from 1968 to 2004?

Answer: Montana

Montana voted for Bill Clinton in 1992.

Other states that did not vote Democrat from 1968 to 2004 include Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Alaska.
7. From 1980 to 2004, which of these four states voted for the winning presidential candidate every time?

Answer: Nevada

Nevada voted for every winner, along with Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Louisiana, Kentucky and Ohio.

Colorado voted for Bob Dole in 1996 and New Hampshire voted for John Kerry in 2004. Alaska voted Republican in both 1992 and 1996, when Bill Clinton won the election.
8. Which of the following has voted the most consistently for a single party's presidential candidates?

Answer: Washington DC

Since the 1964 election, when it was first granted electoral votes, Washington DC has voted for the Democrat every time. Since statehood in 1959, Hawaii voted Democrat every year except for the electoral landslides of 1972 (Nixon) and 1984 (Reagan), while Alaska voted Republican every time except for 1964 (LBJ).

In the 24 elections since its statehood, Arizona voted Republican in 16 and Democratic in 8.
9. From the end of reconstruction until the Republican southern strategy of the late 1960s, the "solid south" was a Democratic stronghold. Who was the first post-reconstruction Republican to receive the vote of a former Confederate state?

Answer: Warren Harding

Warren Harding narrowly won Tennessee in 1920. Next was Herbert Hoover, who won Texas, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Florida in 1928. Eisenhower then won Texas, Florida, Tennessee and Virginia in 1952 and added Louisiana in 1956. Barry Goldwater's 1964 campaign planted the seeds for the southern strategy. Aside from his home state of Arizona, the only states Goldwater won were in the south: Louisiana, Missippi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina; five deep southern states was a Republican breakthrough. Now, the south is almost as reliably Republican as it used to be Democrataic.
10. What do Al Gore, George McGovern, Al Smith and William Howard Taft have in common?

Answer: They lost their home state in a presidential election

Gore lost Tennessee in 2000, McGovern lost South Dakota in 1972, Smith lost New York in 1928 and Taft lost Ohio in his bid for reelection in 1912.
