Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many catapults does the "Admiral Kuznetsov" have?

Answer: 0

Due to the high power to weight ratio of the Sukhoi Su-25/33, the Kuznetsov needs only a 14 degree ski jump ramp to get the airplanes airborne.
2. Which of the following US aircraft carriers is nuclear powered?

Answer: USS Carl Vinson

The Kitty Hawk class carriers were not nuclear powered, and all have now been decommissioned. Carl Vinson is a Nimitz class carrier.
3. What was the pennant number of the British Invincible class aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious?

Answer: R 06

HMS Ark Royal (R 07) and HMS Invincible (R 05) were the other two Invincible class carriers. A contract was awarded in February 2003 to British Aerospace for two huge (by British standards) replacement aircraft carriers.
4. How many SSBN missile tubes does a French Le Triomphant class ballistic missile submarine have?

Answer: 16

Le Triomphant submarines carry 16 Aerospatiale M45/TN 75 missiles, as well as SM 39 Exocet SSMs.
5. Which of the following countries does not have any cruisers in active service?

Answer: France

The United States Navy has 22 guided missile cruisers. Peru has the De Ruyter. Russia owns Kriov, Slava, Kara and Kynda classes. France does have a cruiser, but it is used as a training ship and is not in active service.
6. How many ballistic missiles does a Russian Typhoon SSBN carry?

Answer: 20

Typhoons carry 20 Makayev SS-N-20 (RSM 52/3M20) Sturgeon missiles with 10 MIRVeD warheads of 200 kT.
7. Which class of Russian cruiser is the only one to have vertical launch missile tubes?

Answer: Kirov

While Kirov has VLS tubes, the others have to fire SSMs through 8 twin launchers (Slava); 2 quad launchers (Kynda) or 2 twin launcers (Kara.)
8. Russia has modified Kiev class aircraft carriers in active service.

Answer: False

The last modified Kiev class was sold to India, who also own "Viraat" (ex-HMS Hermes, bought from the Royal Navy.)
9. What was the problem with the Charles de Gaulle, when it was built?

Answer: The flight deck was too short for E-2 Hawkeyes

An extra two foot or so of flight deck had to be welded onto the aircraft carrier, so that the Hawkeye could land safely. Charles de Gaulle only has 3 arrester wires, and no ski jump ramp.
10. So far, 3 Seawolf class submarines have been built. The first two are called Seawolf (SSN 21) and Connecticut (SSN 22), but what is the name of the third (SSN 23?)

Answer: Jimmy Carter

The seawolf was designed with lessons learnt from upgrading the 688 (Los Angeles) class attack submarines. These upgrades include rubber tiles mounted on the outside of the hull, to absorb active sonar waves, and Vertical launch tubes for Tomahawk anti-ship/cruise missiles.
11. Which of the following US warships does not have '67' as part of their pennant number?

Answer: USS Mitscher (DDG)

USS Mitscher (DDG 57) is an Arleigh Burke class AEGIS destroyer, as is USS Cole (DDG 67.) USS Shiloh (CG 67) is a Ticonderoga class AEGIS cruiser.
12. HMS Ocean comes under which category of ship?

Answer: Amphibious Forces

Although HMS Ocean (L 12) carries helicopters, it is classed as an amphibious forces vessel due to the hovercraft and LCVPs carried to take tanks/combat vehicles ashore.
13. The last of the French Clemenceau class aircraft carriers (Foch) was sold to Brazil, but what was it renamed by the Brazilian Navy?

Answer: Sao Paulo

Brazil bought the Foch to replace the Minas Gerais, ex-HMS Hermes, which was bought from the Royal Navy. 15 A-4 Skyhawks strike fighters are carried, which were bought from the Kuwaiti Air Force in 1998.
14. What Surface-to-Air Missile system is used by type 23 'Duke' class frigates?

Answer: BAe Seawolf GWS 16 Mod 1 VLS

BAe Sea Dart is used on type 42 destroyers. GDC Standard SM-2 is the standard SAM used on most american warships. McDonnell Douglas Harpoon is an SSM used by both Royal and United States Navies.
15. What name is being given to the new aircraft carrier CVN 77?

Answer: USS George HW Bush

USS Ronald Reagan is already an aircraft carrier name (CVN 76). CVN 77 will be last of the (by now heavily modified) Nimitz class carriers. After this, a new class of carriers is planned (CVNX). Three have been proposed (CVN 78-80).
