Truman became president in the final months of WWII and was involved in the decision to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He was elected in his own right in 1948. He was married to Bess Truman who did not enjoy the spotlight very much but lived to be 97 years old.

Garfield was shot in the summer of 1881 by a disgruntled office seeker and died in September of blood poisoning in the same village where his wife lay ill of malaria.
