Question 1 of 10
1. First, I was talking to my friend from Mexico and I accidentally stepped in a pile of dog poo. I was extremely embarrassed, so I said to him 'Estoy embarazada.' He gave me a funny look and asked if I was sure. What had I just told him? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. After getting over my initial embarrassment, we continued to talk. We passed a pastry shop and having a craving for some pie, I told him, 'Quiero comer pie.' Well he was rolling on the ground laughing at me and I thought I couldn't possibly have done anything wrong this time. What was my mistake? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Could this day get any worse? Well it can, and my next mistake proves it. I have seen the word 'quitar' in several different books, and I want to use it because I think it means 'to quit' and I need to tell my friend that I have quit my job. Would 'quitar' be the correct word to use?

Question 4 of 10
4. Well, by now I am pretty avergonzado because I just can't seem to get this language thing to work. My friend and I continue walking and he tells me that he wants to find some 'globos' for his three-year-old sister. I am confused as to why a three-year-old would want a globe, and I am even more confused when we walk into a party store. What is it that he really wants to buy her? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Now that I know that 'quitar' means 'to take off', I decide to be nice to the next person I see by informing him that he has a rope tied to his leg. I decide that the best way to do this is to say, 'Quítese la ropa!'. My friend informs me that it isn't polite to say things like that on the street. What have I just asked the man to do? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. After all this walking I am rather sweaty and decide to head to the hotel to take a shower. Once there, I realize that there is no soap in the bathroom so I call down to the front desk and ask them to bring me some 'sopa'. When the doorbell rings, I open it and find, not a bar of soap, but a bowl of _________ waiting for me. Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Oh my! Will I ever learn to speak Spanish correctly? I'm beginning to think that I can't stick my foot in my mouth anymore when I start to read the newspaper. I read the following sentence and I get extremely confused: "Juan y Pablo chocaron hoy en el parque." I am upset that my two best friends would resort to choking each other after being friends for so long. Which of the words in the sentence did I not understand and what does it mean in English? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Ok, now I have a little matching exercise for you. Which of the following is a false cognate and is therefore mismatched with its English equivalent? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Again, pick which one of the following is a false cognate and incorrectly matched with its English meaning. Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Lastly, many Spanish words look similar to English words in written form, making them look like cognates. Their pronunciation can vary. One such word is 'hay' which looks like this English word hay. Which of the following is the real definition of hay? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First, I was talking to my friend from Mexico and I accidentally stepped in a pile of dog poo. I was extremely embarrassed, so I said to him 'Estoy embarazada.' He gave me a funny look and asked if I was sure. What had I just told him?

Answer: I'm pregnant

As a Spanish teacher, this is one that I warn my students about to save them from the embarrassment. 'Embarazada' means pregnant. The correct way to say 'I'm embarrassed' is to say 'Tengo verguenza.' or 'Estoy avergonzado(a)'.

Answer: The Spanish word 'pie' means 'foot'.

This false cognate looks the same as the English 'pie' but is pronounced differently. While 'pie'(pronounced 'pee-ay') is the Spanish word for 'foot', you would pronounce the Spanish word for pie the same way that you say it in English, but you would spell it different in Spanish--pay.
3. Could this day get any worse? Well it can, and my next mistake proves it. I have seen the word 'quitar' in several different books, and I want to use it because I think it means 'to quit' and I need to tell my friend that I have quit my job. Would 'quitar' be the correct word to use?

Answer: No

While the verb 'quitar' looks like it could mean to quit, it is a false cognate and can have several different meanings. Some of its meanings include, 'to take off' as in 'Quítate el suéter'(take off your sweater.) and 'to get away(off)' as in 'Quítate!' (Get off/away from me!).

Answer: balloons

'Globo' is one word used to mean 'balloon'. Another word you might hear is 'bomba'.

Answer: Take off his clothes.

While the word 'ropa' looks like it could mean 'rope' it is actually the word for 'clothes/clothing'. While this isn't one that is too likely to get you into trouble (how often is it that you find yourself having to tell someone to take their rope off!), it can cause confusion if you don't know what it means.

Answer: soup

This one is all too easy to mix up. 'Sopa' means 'soup' while 'jabón' means 'soap'.

Answer: chocaron--wrecked

The word 'chocar' can be used to talk about having a wreck/accident in one's car.
8. Ok, now I have a little matching exercise for you. Which of the following is a false cognate and is therefore mismatched with its English equivalent?

Answer: lectura--lecture

A 'lectura' is a reading, as in a passage to read. There are different ways to say lecture in Spanish. Some of these include: 'conferencia', 'disertación', 'sermón' and 'perorata'. There are others, and the word you choose should depend on the context in which it is being used.
9. Again, pick which one of the following is a false cognate and incorrectly matched with its English meaning.

Answer: parientes--parents

The word 'parientes' is used to describe all family members, not just your parents. This would include aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers/sisters, parents, grandparents, etc. The word for parents is 'padres'.
10. Lastly, many Spanish words look similar to English words in written form, making them look like cognates. Their pronunciation can vary. One such word is 'hay' which looks like this English word hay. Which of the following is the real definition of hay?

Answer: there is, there are

The word 'hay' can mean either there is or there are. It is not even a noun at all in Spanish. An example sentence would be: 'Hay cuatro muchachos en el cuarto.'- There are four boys in the room.
