Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The most famous political sex scandal of our time was the Clinton-Lewinsky Affair. What was the name of the 'friend' of Monica Lewinsky who broke the story?

Answer: Linda Tripp

Linda Tripp had worked in the George H. W. Bush administration. She had some bitter thoughts about the way she was treated by the Clinton White House. She befriend a young intern, Monica Lewinsky, who, over time, told her of physical contact with Clinton. She then began to record phone conversations with Lewinsky under the advice given by her lawyer and also Ken Starr, who wound up as chief investigator of the affair.

Tripp was also something of a loose cannon in the Republican administration as she allegedly spread rumors of a George H. W. Bush extra-marital affair. She also failed to acknowledge an arrest record for theft.
2. In 2006, a Congressman was found to be sending explicit emails to mostly teenage Congressional pages or former pages. What was his name?

Answer: Mark Foley

Because of the documentation and testimony, Foley had little chance for rebuttal. He said that he had no contact with pages until they had completed their tour of duty. Alcohol was involved in the contacts. He also claimed that he was abused by a priest as a teen, a fact that was later verified. Foley resigned and returned to Florida. In Congress Foley was an advocate against child pornography. He came 'out of the closet' and began to live openly as a gay man and began to sell real estate.

The Stubbs and Crane were involved in similar contacts in 1973 that resulted in stricter rules on the relationship between Congressmen and pages.

Kolbe's issues came to light about the same time as Foley.
3. John Profumo was Secretary of War who had an affair with a young woman named Christine Keeler. When it was revealed that she was also a consort of Yevgemy Ivanov, an attache in the Russian Embassy, Profumo lied about the situation to the House of Commons. This brought about his resignation and a few months after, the resignation of the Prime Minister. Who was this Prime Minister?

Answer: Harold McMillan

It was never shown that any sensitive material was passed among Profumo-Keeler-Ivanov, it shook confidence in Macmillan's government. However, a less publicized affair dealt with John Vassell.

Vassell was a Naval Attache at the British Embassy in Moscow. The Soviets obtain incriminating photos of Vassell as used them to blackmail him into being a Soviet spy. Allegedly, confidential documents were passed on regarding radar, torpedoes, and other sub-marine warfare plans. He served 10 years of an 18 year sentence.

McMillan, under heavy fire, resigned in October 1963, citing 'ill health'. He did, however, live another 23 years and was often a powerful adviser to succeeding governments.
4. Gary Hart was on the fast track to become President of the United States but became derailed. He did not run for another term as Senator from Colorado to devote his energy to the presidential campaign. He dared the press to follow him around and they would get bored. They did. They were not bored. He was photographed with a woman not his wife named Donna Rice abroad a yacht. What was the name of the yacht that the tabloid press exploited?

Answer: Monkey Business

Hart continued his campaign but received only 4% of the New Hampshire Primary and withdrew. He had published 15 books on public issues and has been active as a consultant. He has authored four novels under the name John Blackthorn. He holds a professorship at the University of Colorado.

Rumors still exist that Hart was 'set up' by political enemies.
5. Gerda Munsinger, after being rejected by another country, entered the country and fulfilled a domestic worker obligation. Then she moved into political circles and reportedly had affairs with George Hees and Pierre Sevigny, both prominent cabinet members. When this came to light, there were resignations and a shaken government. In what country did this occur?

Answer: Canada

Munsinger had already been deported to East Germany before the affair became public knowledge. However, the John Diefenbaker government announced incorrectly also that she was dead. Hearing this, Gerda Munsinger called a press conference in Germany to proclaim that she was still alive.

At the conference her answers were vague. Pierre Sevigny in particular was the focus of the scandal as he was Minister of Defense and it was at the height of the Cold War.
6. John Jenrette was a Congressman from South Carolina. For what sexual indiscretion was he famous?

Answer: Having sexual encounters on the Capitol steps

The event provided much material for comedians. However, what really brought Jenrette down was accepting bribes caught on video tape as part of the federal ASCAM investigation.

John Jenrette returned to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where he dabbles in real estate. He also has had some shop-lifting charges.

Rita Jenrette, his now ex-wife, did a 'Playboy' nude centerfold. He appeared in several forgettable movies such as "Zombie Island Massacre" and "Malibu Bikini Shop". She also entered real estate, once suing Donald Trump for 800 million dollars, that was settled out of court.
7. While her husband was out of the country for over nine months, Margaret "Peggy" O'Neill Timberlake had a miscarriage. Believing that his wife had been unfaithful, John Timberlake committed suicide. Very shortly, O'Neill married John Eaton, Secretary of War. This caused a uproar as the wives of other cabinet members who refused to accept Peggy into polite society. The Presidential cabinet was split resulting in several resignations including the Vice-President of the United States. In whose administration did this occur?

Answer: Andrew Jackson

Because the rebellion against O'Neill was spearheaded by the wives of the cabinet members, it was dubbed "The Petticoat Affair". John C. Calhoun did resign as Vice-President but probably not just because of this. He had different ideas on States' Rights and slavery. Van Buren because of attrition became the top aide to Jackson.
8. Modern technology is a marvelous thing but it can bite you back. This is what Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his Chief of Staff Christine Beatty found out the hard way. Exposure of text messages between Kilpatrick and Beatty not only revealed their extra-martial affair but elaborate attempts at cover-up. In what American city did this occur?

Answer: Detroit

This is an instance again where the affair itself pales in the pattern of lies and manipulation to cover it up. Nearly all the eight counts against Kilpatrick and the seven against Beatty dealt with lying, perjury, and obstruction of justice. It cost the city of Detroit over eight million dollars to settle the suits against the pair.
9. Ron Davies, a powerful Welsh politician, had what he called 'a moment of madness'. What was this moment?

Answer: Getting himself mugged in a gay section of London

While walking on Clapham Common, Davies met a man who invited him to lunch. Instead he was mugged at knife-point. Two days later he resigned as Secretary of State for Wales. He stated that he was under treatment for a personality disorder that caused him to seek dangerous situations and that he was bi-sexual. He has remained interested in politics.
10. At 2:00 AM October 4,1974 Wilbur Mills, Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, crashed his car into a crash rail. When police investigated, a dancer with the stage name of Fanne Fox, tried to run away from officers and fell into Tidal Basin. She was not severely injured but did require hospitalization On November 30, 1974 Mills appeared on the burlesque stage of the Pilgrim Theatre in Boston with Fanne Fox and her husband and held a press conference. What did Mills claim to be the cause of his behavior?

Answer: Alcoholism

Mills was relieved from the Chairmanship and resigned from Congress. He became a strong advocate and leader for alcoholism issues.

Mills is given credit of being the father of Medicare as well as COLA which enables Social Security to keep abreast of inflation. At one time he was considered a powerful candidate for President.
