Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This runaway sheep went to London. She stood at the bottom of an obelisk known simply as the "Monument". What does the Monument commemorate?

Answer: The Great Fire

The Great Fire of London took place in 1666. It began in Pudding lane and ended at Pie or Pye Corner. If the monument fell down in the right direction, the great fiery ball at the top would land where the fire started.

It is sometimes suggested that the fire effectively killed off the rats and fleas that had carried the plague the previous year. The dates are easily remembered with this rhyme: "1665 No one left alive, 1666 London burnt like sticks".
2. One runaway sheep was recorded on an airforce fighter plane standing in a sandy desert. In what desert country were British troops fighting a war in 2013?

Answer: Afghanistan

There has been a long civil war in Afghanistan. As a result of the 9/11 bombing in America, NATO troops were sent in to seek the arrest of the Al Quaida leader. Although this did not happen, the oppressive Taliban government was ousted, and NATO forces remained in Afghanistan until 2014, trying to help establish a strong, peaceful government.

Although many British people were against the invasion, the army continued military operations there until 2014, when a planned military withdrawal was due to take place.
3. This sheep was tucked in the front of a skier's coat as he came down Whistler Mountain. In which country was this?

Answer: Canada

Whistler, the city, is between two large mountains, both used for skiing. This is in British Columbia, on the west coast of Canada. The area was originally settled by gold prospectors and fur trappers. The name came from the noise made by the hoary marmots that live in the rocks there.
4. My next runaway sheep is standing on a row of cobblestones on the corner of a street of new shops and buildings. These cobblestones mark the place where a famous (or infamous) wall once stood. What was the wall called?

Answer: The Berlin Wall

The Berlin wall was built to keep East and West apart during the cold war when Russia and the Western Nations were so suspicious of each other. The most famous crossing point was a gate called Checkpoint Charlie. The wall stood for 28 years from 1961 to 1989.
5. This picture is filmed by holding the sheep up close to the camera and letting the female statue in the lake behind, show in the background. The Lake is Lake Constance and the lady swings in the wind. If she faces you, what do you see?

Answer: She has a slit dress which shows her underclothes

Lake Constance is on the border between Germany and Switzerland. The statue is 9 metres high and made of concrete. When erected in 1993 she immediately caused a lot of controversy, but as she stood on private ground she was not removed. She holds a naked man in each hand, representing a pope and an emperor, supposedly showing the power a woman can wield over men.

The story of the original Imperia is written by Balzac and tells that Imperia was a prostitute who seduced high ranking church officers. Balzac seems to be severely criticizing the high ranking church authorities.

There are also several sites on the internet under the general title of Lake Constance, which tell more.
6. In Blackpool, in the north of England, this sheep sat on one of the girders of a famous copy of an even more famous tower in France. What is the name of the original structure?

Answer: The Eiffel Tower

The only one of the offered answers which really exists is the Eiffel Tower. It was built as the centre piece for the World Fair - the Paris Exposition in 1889. It was designed by Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier, although Eiffel usually gets the credit because he owned the firm for which they worked and the design was submitted to the contest for the landmark representing Paris in the name of the firm.

The tower is built of wrought iron.
7. This sheep sat in a hot air balloon looking down on a vast tract of ground, which Princess Elizabeth might well have seen the day before she heard that her father had died. Which of these animals might this sheep have seen?

Answer: Lion

Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II while on safari in Africa. She was staying at Treetops Hotel in Kenya. Balloon trips, although expensive are apparently a highlight of many holidays worldwide, because of the views they offer. The lucky sheep went to the Serengeti National Park for his trip. Only a lion would live there naturally.
8. This rather wet sheep stood in the rain on a drystone wall overlooking a large prison in the west of England. He did not see the Hound of the Baskervilles, although he claims he looked for it. Where did he look?

Answer: Dartmoor

Dartmoor is the site of one of the best known prisons in England - Dartmoor Prison. It is out in the wilds, where the rain seems wetter than anywhere else (I know from experience!) and where Conan Doyle set his Sherlock Holmes adventure with the Hound of the Baskervilles.

It is perhaps not surprising that the prisoners prefer to stay inside in the warm rather than risk getting caught in the bogs or breaking their legs on the rocky tors in the darkness of a foggy night.
9. This sheep sent a post card, not a photograph. He said he was still trying to find a way to get where he wanted to go. He says it is an island in the Pacific with big - BIG - B.I.G statues of strange looking men. Can you say where he wants to go?

Answer: Easter Island

Easter Island is in Polynesia in the Pacific Ocean. Historic detail is hotly debated. It has not been populated for very long as human history goes. Suggested dates for the first inhabitants vary from 300AD to 1600AD. What is certainly known is that, at one time it was covered in a lush growth of a particular palm tree which were thoughtlessly felled, changing the ecology completely.

The island now belongs to Chile. It has one airport, with a single runway which is intended to be suitable for use as an emergency landing for space shuttles or normal by wide bodied planes.
10. This sheep is sitting on a boat looking at the famous statue of a siren said to lure sailors to their deaths in this famous German river. Do you know the name of the river?

Answer: The Rhine

The siren is named the Lorelei. She sits in the narrowest, most dangerous part of the middle section of the river Rhine. River cruises are popular holidays with their beautiful, changing scenery and luxurious lifestyle, although there are also less expensive ones. Rhine cruises are always among the most popular, maybe because there are no storms of the intensity you can get on ocean going cruises.

This sheep enjoyed a leisurely cruise with his two elderly guardians.
