Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Yo, preterite, llegar

Answer: llegué

The 1st person singular of preterite tense would have been 'llegé', but in order to retain the consistent pronunciation of 'g', 'u' is always put before 'e'.
2. Yo, preterite, averiguar

Answer: averigüé

Again, normally it would have been 'averigué' in the 1st person singular of preterite tense, but you want 'u' to be pronounced; in Spanish, if 'u' is pronounced after 'g', it is spelled 'ü'.
3. Tú, imperfect, ver

Answer: veías

If the verb had been regular, it would have been 'vías' in the 2nd person singular of imperfect tense, but the conjugation of 'ver' is irregular.
4. Nosotros, conditional, querer

Answer: querríamos

'Querer' has an irregular stem in the conditional and future tenses: it is 'querr-'. Add the ending 'íamos' to the stem to get the 1st person plural of the present conditional.
5. Uds., imperfect subjunctive, andar

Answer: anduvieran

Take the 3rd person plural of the preterite tense, in this case the irregular 'anduvieron'; drop the ending 'ieron' to obtain the stem 'anduv-'. Add the appropriate ending, in this case, 'ieran', and you will get the 3rd person plural of the imperfect subjunctive: 'anduvieran'. You could also add 'iesen' to the stem; the two forms are interchangeable in modern Spanish.
6. Ella, present perfect subjunctive, romper

Answer: haya roto

Take the appropriate form of 'haber' in the present subjunctive, in this case 'haya', and add the irregular past participle of 'romper', 'roto'; you will get 'haya roto'.
7. Ellos, present subjunctive, conocer

Answer: conozcan

The first person singular of the present tense is 'conozco'; the stem is 'conozc-'. Add the ending 'an' to the stem, and you will get the 3rd person plural of the present subjunctive 'conozcan'.
8. El, future, hacer

Answer: hará

'Hacer', like 'querer', has an irregular stem in the future and conditional tenses: 'har-'. Add the appropriate ending, in this case 'á', and you'll have 'hará'.
9. Yo, conditional perfect, escribir

Answer: habría escrito

The conjugation chart of 'haber' in the conditional tense: habría, tú habrías, él habría, nosotros habríamos, ellos habrían. The conditional perfect is composed of the conditional present in an appropriate form and the past participle, in this case the irregular 'escrito'.
10. Ud., preterite, sugerir

Answer: sugirió

'Sugerir' is one of the so-called stem-changing verbs. When the stress falls on the stem vowel, the stem changes. In this case, it changes 'e' to 'i' in 3rd singular and plural of the preterite, which is, respectively, 'sugirió' and 'sugirieron'.
