Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the titles of the three principal officers of a Masonic Lodge?

Answer: Worshipful Master, Senior Warden, Junior Warden

The term "Worshipful" is derived from an old English word, 'worchyp' which means to respect. The title 'Worshipful Master' therefore means respected master. Other titles in many English speaking countries are preceded by the word 'Worshipful', as in 'Worshipful Lord Mayor', or 'His/Her Worship The Mayor'.
2. Masonry in the United States specifically accepts men who profess a belief in which of these?

Answer: A Supreme Being

In the Scandinavian Countries, a profession of Christianity is required to become a member of a Masonic Lodge. Most other countries do not have this requirement. However, no atheist can become a Mason in any recognized lodge.
3. What is the title of the Lodge Officer who guards the outer door of a Masonic Lodge in U.S. Lodges?

Answer: Tiler

Tiler is derived from the Latin word 'tegere' meaning cover or roof. Thus the tiler is charged with the duty of 'covering' the entrance to the Lodge, preventing unauthorized persons from entering.
4. How is the Worshipful Master of a Lodge chosen?

Answer: By annual election

There are five elected officers in a Masonic Lodge. The Treasurer and The Secretary are two of those who are elected, and they often serve in that position for several consecutive years. The Master, Senior Warden and Junior Warden are the other three, and in most cases serve a one year term.
5. Which Lodge Officer is responsible for the superintendence of the members while at refreshment?

Answer: The Junior Warden

Tradition has it that the Junior Warden is responsible for "Calling the Craft from labor to refreshment" and to see "that they do not convert the purpose of refreshment into intemperance and excess".
6. A traditional Masonic Lodge that confers the first three degrees of Masonry is often referred to as "The __________ Lodge"?

Answer: Blue

There have been many explanations for the use of the color blue. One of many is that the color blue is deemed to be beneficent; denoting immortality, eternity, chastity and fidelity. Some Masonic scholars say that 'blue' refers to the blue dome of heaven.
7. In Masonic terms, what is a Grand Lodge?

Answer: The governing body in any given masonic jurisdiction

In the United States there are 51 Grand Lodges, one for each state and the District of Columbia. Viz: The Grand Lodge of Minnesota, The Grand Lodge of Alaska etc. European countries, for the most part, have Grand Lodges governing all Lodges in that country. Viz: The Grand Lodge of Norway, The Grand Lodge of France etc.
8. Why might the Worshipful Master wear a hat while presiding over his Lodge?

Answer: All of these

This hat or cover is often a silk top hat. This is because the Master and his officers are often clothed in either tuxedo or white tie and tails. There are many variations on this theme around the United States. In Texas, you may see western garb and ten gallon stetsons.

In Arkansas, you may see the "Hillbilly Tuxedo",consisting of bib overalls and a plaid flannel shirt. In the Canadian provinces, you will often see kilts with all the traditional accoutrements.
9. What is the "Great light of Masonry"?

Answer: The holy book of one's faith

Every Masonic Lodge has upon its altar a Holy Book. The culture in which the Lodge is located will determine which holy book is used. In many instances there is more than one 'Holy Book' in place. This practice is one of the manifestations of the universality of Masonry.
10. Who can recommend a person for membership in a Masonic Lodge?

Answer: Any two members in good standing
