Lydia Chapin Taft (1712 - 1778) voted at town meetings in her home town of Uxbridge, Massachusetts.
2. Universal suffrage for women in the United States was enacted into law via which Amendment to the Constitution?

Answer: Nineteenth

The Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution was ratified in 1920.
Previous to this some states and territories had granted limited women's voting rights, and, in the case of Utah, removed them again.
3. As well as being the first European country to grant women universal suffrage, which country had the first female members of parliament?

Answer: Finland

The electorate in Finland returned the first women as Members of Parliament in 1907. Technically Finland was controlled by Russia at the time, but it was classed as an autonomous region and had its own legislature.
4. Kate Sheppard led the women's suffrage movement in which country? (The first country to grant unrestricted voting rights to all women.)

Answer: New Zealand

The "Women's Suffrage Bill," made law in New Zealand shortly before the General Election of 1893, gave the vote to all women who had reached their majority, regardless of marital status, social status or race. It was 25 years before women were actually allowed to stand for election to the country's Parliament.
5. One province of Canada waited 23 years after the rest of the country before granting women a vote. Which province was this?

Answer: Quebec

Quebec granted women the vote in 1940, whilst in the rest of Canada they had been voting since 1917.
6. The earliest European state to allow women to vote, (in certain circumstances), was an island republic which did so in 1755. Which island was it?

Answer: Corsica

The Corsican Republic allowed all citizens over the age of 25 to vote, although women had to be either widowed or unmarried. These voting rights were suspended when France annexed Corsica in 1769.
7. Women in the United Kingdom were specifically disenfranchised by an Act of Parliament in 1832. Commonly known as 'The Reform Act', what was the proper title of this Act?

Answer: The Representation of the People Act 1832

Whilst increasing the number of men who were entitled to vote, the Act specifically denied the right to women, and thus was the trigger for the formation of the women's suffrage movement in the UK.
8. Who was the English suffragette who threw herself under the King's horse in the Epsom Derby in 1913?

Answer: Emily Davison

Emily Davsion died of her injuries a few days after the infamous Derby. Her epitaph was the slogan of the Women's Social and Political Union - "Deeds, Not Words."
9. The first woman to be elected to the British House of Commons was a suffragette. Who was she?

Answer: Constance Markiewicz

Constance Georgina, Countess of Markiewicz, was elected to the British House of Commons in 1918, as a member of the Irish party Sinn Fein. She did not take her seat however, as she was a staunch believer in Irish Nationalism. She eventually took a seat in the Dail, the Irish Parliament. Nancy Astor was the first woman to take her seat in the House of Commons.
10. There are still countries in the world where women are totally denied a vote under any circumstances, which of the following is one of them?

Answer: Vatican City

Perhaps surprisingly, it is the Vatican City which has absolutely no votes for women at all. In Bhutan, each household is given one vote, so although many women do not vote in practice, there is an opportunity for them to do so given the right circumstances.

In Lebanon, voting is compulsory for men but not for women, and women must meet certain educational criteria that men do not have to meet. In the United Arab Emirates, some women may vote in certain circumstances.
