Samuel Tilden's health prevented him from running again for president but Hendricks was nominated a second time in 1884 for vice-president.

Cleveland won the nomination on the second ballot in Chicago. Hendricks was then chosen on the first ballot to be Cleveland's running mate.

In the same cemetery is buried President Benjamin Harrison, Vice-Presidents Thomas Marshall and Charles Fairbanks, poet James Whitcomb Riley and gangster John Dillinger.
