Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. $2 Dollar Bill
Answer: Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President of the United States, graces the front of the $2 bill. The bill is still being produced though it is unusual to come across one as most people hoard them believing they are rarer than they actually are. A painting of "The Declaration of Independence" by John Trumbull appears on the reverse side of the $2 bill. Prior to 1976 the reverse side depicted Jefferson's Virginia home of Monticello.
2. $10 Dollar Bill
Answer: Alexander Hamilton
The $10 bill has depicted Alexander Hamilton since 1923. The U.S. Treasury Building has appeared on the back of this bill since 1929 and appropriately so since Hamilton was the first Secretary of the Treasury.
3. $20 Dollar Bill
Answer: Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson, 7th United States President, has been on the front of the $20 bill since 1928. It is ironic that he appears on this or any denomination since he was not a proponent of paper money. In his farewell address as President he warned the American people about the dangers of paper currency. A likeness of the White House is on the reverse side of the $20 bill.
4. $50 Dollar Bill
Answer: Ulysses S. Grant
Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States, has graced the front of the $50 bill since 1914 and the U.S. Capitol building has been on the reverse side of the bill since 1929. A proposal was put forth in 2005 to replace Grant's likeness with that of Ronald Reagan but it got no further than the House Financial Services Committee.
5. $100 Dollar Bill
Answer: Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin Franklin has appeared on the front of the $100 bill since 1914. In addition to being one of the Founding Fathers of the United States he was also Governor of Pennsylvania from 1785-88 and the first U.S. Postmaster General. He was the original 'jack-of-all-trades' known as being an inventor, scientist, writer, printer, humorist, politician and statesman.
Independence Hall in Philadelphia has been on the back side of the 'C' note since 1928.
6. $500 Dollar Bill
Answer: William McKinley
William McKinley, 25th President of the United States, has appeared on the $500 bill since 1928. The previous series of $500 bills showed the likeness of John Marshall, fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, on the front and the reverse side depicts Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto discovering the Mississippi.
7. $1000 Dollar Bill
Answer: Grover Cleveland
Grover Cleveland, 22nd and 24th President of the United States, replaced Alexander Hamilton as the face of the $1000 bill. Hamilton appeared on the front of the bill until 1928 when it was decided that no one individual should have his likeness on more than one denomination and Hamilton was already on the $10 bill.
8. $5000 Dollar Bill
Answer: James Madison
The portrait of James Madison, 4th President of the United States, appears on the $5000 bill. Although the $5000 bill is still considered legal tender in the U.S., they were last printed in 1945 and officially discontinued in 1969 along with the $500, $1000 and $10,000 bills.
9. $10,000 Dollar Bill
Answer: Salmon P. Chase
Salmon P. Chase appears on the front of the $10,000 bill. Chase was Secretary of the Treasury during Abraham Lincoln's administration, was both a Senator and Governor in Ohio and became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The $10,000 bill was first issued in 1918 and was the largest Federal Reserve Note ever produced for public use.
10. $100,000 Dollar Bill
Answer: Woodrow Wilson
Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of the United States, appears on the front of the largest bill ever produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Only 42,000 of these bills were ever printed and they were never circulated or issued for public use. They were first printed in 1934, discontinued in 1940 and only used for official transactions between Federal Reserve Banks.
