Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first US president never to be elected to either the office of President or to the office of vice president?

Answer: Gerald Ford

Ford was elected as a Congressman in Michigan and served 25 years. He was appointed to the vice-presidency by Nixon after the resignation of Spiro Agnew in 1973 and became president after Nixon's resignation in 1974. He was defeated by Carter for re-election, and was therefore never elected as president.
2. Before the Clinton administration, only one other president was ever impeached by the House of Representatives. Who was he?

Answer: Andrew Johnson

Johnson was impeached by the Radical Republicans in the House who were concerned that he was being too lenient with the South. He avoided conviction and removal by the Senate by a bare one vote.
3. It has always been generally accepted that the president should be addressed by the title 'Mr. President', but there was some debate originally on what the actual title should be. Which method of address did the Senate favor?

Answer: His Highness, The President of the United States of America and Protector of the Same

Yep, while the House favored 'Mr. President' the Senate (even more aristocratic back then) favored 'His Highness'. Luckily cooler heads prevailed.
4. What is the term for a sitting president who has not been re-elected, but still has over a month until his successor comes to office?

Answer: Lame Duck

The term 'Lame Duck' has been in use since the 18th century and refers to a duck who is injured making it fair game for predators.
5. Who was the only 'King' ever to become president?

Answer: Gerald Ford

Gerald Ford's mother left his biological father and he took his stepfather's name. Therefore, before he was a Ford, he was born Leslie Lynch King, Jr.
6. After the death of President Kennedy, it became clear that there needed to be a specific line of succession should the president and vice-president both be killed. According the the Constitution, who is next in line if both the president and vice-president should be incapacitated or killed?

Answer: It is not in the Constitution

The twenty-fifth amendment says NOTHING about the line of succession. It is defined by federal law. For those of you who are fuming now, federal law does establish the Speaker of the House as the next in line.
7. What is the maximum number of years a person may serve as US president according to the Amended Constitution?

Answer: Ten

While it is true that the president is limited to two full terms, the Constitution also states that if the president comes to power through the line of succession, and there are two years or less remaining in that term, he may serve another two terms, or ten years.
8. If the US president wishes, what word may he or she substitute for 'swear' in the Oath of Office?

Answer: 'affirm'

This provision is undoubtedly because Quakers and certain other denomination do not wish to swear oaths.
9. Who was the first US president to have The Oath of Office administered by his father?

Answer: Calvin Coolidge

Coolidge was on his family farm in Vermont when he learned that Harding had died of a stroke and he was the new president. He called on his father who was a Justice of the Peace to administer the Oath of Office.
10. Which president was accidentally recorded during a mike check joking that 'My Fellow Americans, I've just signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever, bombing will begin in five minutes'?

Answer: Ronald Reagan

This famous gaffe was for an NPR Saturday address in 1984 when he was going to announce the right to have religious groups meet in public schools. It did not not air but was leaked to the public later.
