President Grant, a 19th century president, was born Hiram Ulysses Grant. However, when Grant was 17, Congressman Hamer nominated him to West Point. He mistakenly wrote down Grant's name as "Ulysses S. Grant of Ohio", and this became his adopted name. His nickname became "Sam" among colleagues at West Point, since the initials "U.S." also stood for "Uncle Sam", a personification that represented the United States in political cartoons from the early 19th century to today.

Coolidge was born John Calvin Coolidge, but was called 'Calvin' from childhood.

Answer: Dwight D. Eisenhower

It was passed in 1951, and was phrased as to not apply to whomever was serving as president when it was ratified. That president was Truman (who decided not to run anyway).
7. Who was the only president to be elected to the presidency twice immediately after serving as vice president?

Answer: Thomas Jefferson

Bush was the opposite: twice elected VP and once president. Reagan was never VP. Nixon was elected president twice, and had served as VP, but there were 8 years between his presidency and his vice presidency.
8. Who was the second president to be assassinated?

Answer: James A. Garfield

Answer: William Howard Taft

After his presidency, Taft served as Professor of Law at Yale until President Harding made him Chief Justice of the United States, a position he held until just before his death in 1930. To Taft, the appointment was his greatest honor -- he wrote: "I don't remember that I ever was President."

12. What president was never elected to the post?

Slightly tricky: none of the choices initially became president by being elected to the post. But Johnson, Truman, and Coolidge were elected to successive terms after their 'accidental' term. Ford was the only one to succeed to the presidency not by the death of his predecessor, but by his (Nixon's) resignation.
13. Who had the shortest term as president?

Answer: William Harrison

Harrison died about a month after his inauguration. He gave the longest inauguration speech ever, in a cold rain. It is speculated that doing this led to the pneumonia that eventually killed him. Garfield served about half a year before dying from his surgeons attempts to remove a bullet he got on July 2, 1881. Roosevelt died less than 3 months after his inauguration, but it was his 4th, actually making his term as president the longest. McKinley had served one full term before being killed half a year into his second term.
14. Who was the youngest man to serve as president?

Answer: Theodore Roosevelt

Kennedy was the youngest elected; Roosevelt the youngest to serve.
