Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who am I? I have a fine military reputation. I stand 6 feet 2 inches tall. I can crush walnuts with my bare hands.

Answer: George Washington

I am quite remarkable - with little formal education and a reputation, in my younger days, for a firey temper to match my red hair I became the father of our fledgling nation. I am the only president to have died in the 18th century. There is an excellent exhibition about me at Fraunces Tavern in New York.
2. Who am I? I wrote George Washington's inaugural address and am the first president to wear pants instead of knee breeches.

Answer: James Madison

I spent my entire life living at the family's Orange County estate, Montpelier. I was the youngest man elected to the Contintental Congress. Early in my career I failed to be re-elected as Orange County's representative in the state legislature. This is because I refused to keep with tradition by providing free whiskey in exchange for votes.
3. Who am I? I am the only president to have been a prisoner of war. I am the first survivor of a presidential assassination attempt.

Answer: Andrew Jackson

I was a prisoner of war during the American Revolution - I was actually slashed on the face and arms by a British officer when I refused to polish his boots. While attending a funeral a man drew pistols to shoot me, but the weapons misfired. I am the first sitting president to have ridden in a train, on June 6, 1833. John Quincy Adams had travelled the same route after having left office. I am the only president who was able to balance the budget - I wiped out the national debt in January 1835.
4. Who am I? I studied at the College of William and Mary. I was Great-great-granduncle to Harry S. Truman. The role of White House hostess devolved to my daughter-in-law.

Answer: John Tyler

My wife died during my presidency and my daughter-in-law, Priscilla, acted as first lady. I met my future wife, 31 years my junior, at a White House reception. Altogether, I fathered 15 children. My Sherwood Forest estate has the longest wooden-frame house in the USA, still used by my descendants. Because of the way I became president, I was frequently referred to as "His Accidency" and "Ex-Vice President Tyler".
5. Who am I? I was elected during the first presidential election to be held in all the states simultaneously. During my 40 years in the army I never lost a battle. The role of White House hostess devolved to my daughter.

Answer: Zachary Taylor

Even though I was a slave-owner I could see that slavery wasn't good for the union, so I spoke out against it. My wife was an invalid during our time in the White House, so my daughter, Betty, acted as hostess while I was president. Despite political maneuvering to get me out of the spotlight, I am responsible for a brilliant military victory at the Battle of Buena Vista in February 1847. I had the nickname "Old Rough and Ready" due to my down-to-earth frontier manner and my slovenly manner of dress - even on the battlefield I preferred civilian clothes to a military uniform.
6. Who am I? My son died while I was president. While president I was accused of abuse of power for, amongst other things, suspending the writ of habeas corpus.

Answer: Abe Lincoln

My son, Willie, died at the age of 12 while I was president. As a matter of interest, I saw my first city at the age of 19, when I visited New Orleans. My funeral, in New York City, was witnessed by two small boys - six-year-old Theodore Roosevelt and his younger brother, Elliott (who was to become the father of Eleanor Roosevelt and, consequently, father-in-law to Franklin Roosevelt).
7. Who am I? Even though I won the election, I had about 250,000 fewer popular votes than my opponent. It took more than three months before a winner could be declared in this election.

Answer: Rutherford B. Hayes

I was declared the victor only 56 hours before the inauguration was due to take place. I had Alexander Graham Bell install a telephone in the White House. It was at my suggestion that the first Easter egg roll was held on the south lawn of the White House.
8. Who am I? Referred to as a dude, at one time I owned more than 80 pairs of trousers - I would often change clothes during the day. I dedicated the Washington Monument.

Answer: Chester Arthur

It was rumoured that I was an accomplice in the assassination of President Garfield, but that was totally untrue. I love fishing and walking at night. My wife died shortly before I became president. I destroyed my personal papers shortly before I died.
9. Who am I? I was twice elected as President of the United States. I am the first presidential candidate to have used a telephone for political campaigning.

Answer: William McKinley

Although elected twice, my second term ended suddenly when I was assassinated in 1901. I was very popular and had millions of mourners lining the railroad tracks to observe my funeral train. During the 1896 campaign I used the phone to speak with 38 of my campaign managers.
10. Who am I? I have received the Nobel Peace Prize. My wife planted the first White House rose garden. I am the only president to be buried in Washington, D.C.

Answer: Woodrow Wilson

It is ironic that I won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1920. It was for my part in the creation of the League of Nations, an organization that my own nation rejected. My wife, Ellen, loved roses and planted the first White House rose garden - she used a seventeenth-century Italian garden style. I am buried at the National Cathederal. I had three amendments made to the constitution - one amendment was to do with the election of senators, but it pales into insignificance when compared to the wide-ranging effects of the other two amendments, one of which involved the introduction of prohibition and the other which gave women the right to vote (although personally, I think that women don't have the intellect to use the vote wisely). (Author's note: As with the other info in this quiz, all comments pertain to the presidents and their opinions, not the authors!)
11. Who am I? I am the first president to visit Alaska. I had many affairs and did not live to see the end of my term of office.

Answer: Warren G. Harding

I was an attractive man. I received over 61% of the popular vote - a remarkable achievement. I was the first president to be elected by both male and female voters.
12. Who am I? I was born into a Quaker family. I am the first president born west of the Mississippi River.

Answer: Herbert Hoover

A successful engineer, I refused to accept a salary cheque for my presidency - I gave all my federal paychecks to charity. I translated a book, written in Latin during the 1500s, into English. Having worked in China, my wife and I both spoke fluent Chinese - while in the White House we spoke Chinese in front of the servants so as to maintain our privacy.
13. Who am I? I am the only one of these four American Presidents to have fathered twins.

Answer: George W. Bush

I have made quite a name for myself due to my unique flair with the English language. A typical example of my linguistic skill was shown at a campaign rally on October 21, 1988 - "It's no exaggeration to say the undecideds could go one way or another."
14. Who am I? I married my childhood sweetheart. I was decorated for my military service and made a decision to take the U.S.A. to war. I am one of the few vice-presidents to be elected president and then fail to be re-elected.

Answer: George H. W. Bush

I was one of the youngest fighter pilots in World War II. I was the only survivor when my plane was shot down over the Pacific Ocean. I received the Distinguished Flying Cross and completed 58 missions. I took a strong stance over Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and can't believe that I wasn't re-elected - the first vice-president to become President and fail to be re-elected since Martin Van Buren.
15. Who am I? I am the first American to win the Nobel Prize.

Answer: Teddy Roosevelt

It is no wonder that my face appears with the other great presidents - Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln - on Mt. Rushmore. My middle name should have been 'Courage'. Quite apart from my amazing list of firsts - the first president to ride in a car, the first president to leave the country on a tour while in office, the first president to fly (after leaving office) - I have a courageous attitude with everything I do - the charge up San Juan Hill, giving a speech while bleeding from assassin's bullet, losing sight in one eye as a result of a boxing match against a professional pugilist at the White House, and having another run at the presidency with my own party.

The biggest trouble I had was controlling my daughter, Alice. A reporter once asked me why I couldn't keep her under control. I replied, "I can keep her under control, or I can run this country - but I can't do both at the same time."
