The academies are: US Military Academy (at West Point, NY), US Naval Academy (at Annapolis, MD), US Coast Guard Academy (at New London, CT), US Air Force Academy (at Colorado Springs, CO) and US Merchant Marine Academy (at King's Point, NY).

The US Military Academy was founded in 1802 on grounds chosen by Gen. George Washington himself.

The Air Force Academy was founded in the early 50s, after being sanctioned by President Eisenhower. While the campus was being built, the first classes were held at a nearby Air Force Base.
