Harvard was the first university founded in the "New World", in 1636. Given the illustrious list of alumni, it's not surprising that Harvard tops students' "Dream School" list.

The official name of the university is the Leland Stanford Junior University, and was founded by robber baron Leland Stanford, Sr. in honor of his son who died of typhoid at the age of 16. It is also somewhat unique in that its official motto is German, "Die Luft der Freiheit weht" (The wind of freedom blows), though during World War I the school claimed this motto was unofficial due to strong anti-German sentiments.

Columbia University is the oldest post-secondary institution in the state of New York, founded in 1754. It also has the distinction of administering the Pulitzer Prize every year.

Yale is one of 40 schools which participates in an online trivia competition where students can win money toward their tuition. 10% of their winnings go to charity, but keep the rest for their tuition, which could be up to $10,000. It's a good thing, too, since the estimated cost of tuition, room, and board for the 2011-2012 year was $55,850!

As impressive as MIT's alumni list may be, its faculty are perhaps even more amazing: 32 Nobel Prize winners including John Forbes Nash, 29 MacArthur fellows, and many other well-known professors and doctors including linguist Noam Chomsky.

In 1850, then-President of Brown, Francis Wayland, established a "New Curriculum" encouraging interdisciplinary study, focus on the liberal arts, and a grading system of ABC/No credit (i.e. no pluses, minuses, or Ds). This curriculum, along with the charter, stands to this day, and has also discouraged the school from founding a business or law school, which makes it, along with Princeton, unique among Ivy League schools.
