Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1900s, how many times did the vice president permanently take over the office of President due to death or resignation?

Answer: 5

Teddy Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson and Gerald Ford all took over for their superiors.
2. Between 1973 and 1974, how many men held the office of vice president?

Answer: 3

Spiro Agnew was elected to be Nixon's VP, and resigned in 1973. Gerald Ford took his place, and after Nixon resigned to make way for Ford, Nelson Rockefeller became the third VP in two years.
3. Theodore Roosevelt, who at the time was the youngest person ever to be president, took over the office for which assassinated chief executive?

Answer: William McKinley

Roosevelt is one of the few presidents to have served without a VP, as he finished McKinley's term without getting a replacement. In 1904, Roosevelt ran with Charles Fairbanks, a senator from Indiana, and won re-election.
4. Five vice presidents died in office during the 1800s.

Answer: False

The list includes George Clinton. And here I thought he was just the brains behind Parliament and the P-Funk movement.

Others who died in office during that century include...
Elbridge Gerry in 1814
William Rufus de Vane King in 1853
Henry Wilson in 1875
Thomas Hendricks in 1885
Garret Hobart in 1899
5. How many vice presidents served under Franklin Roosevelt?

Answer: 3

John Garner, Henry Wallace and Harry S. Truman all served under FDR. Garner served as VP for the first two terms (1933-1941). Truman ascended to the presidency upon Roosevelt's death in 1945, and made the order to drop the atomic bombs which effectively ended World War II.
6. If the president steps down or passes away, and the vice president cannot take office for whatever reason (for example, if they were both implicated in the same scandal that forced the president to step down), who would be next in line to take over the presidency?

Answer: Speaker of the House

To date, this provision has never been used. The rules to replace the vice president are different than those to replace the president. If the VP can no longer serve, the president is allowed to choose a successor.
7. Who was the first VP to formally serve as acting president due to the temporary disability of the sitting president?

Answer: George H.W. Bush

Bush took the reins in 1985 when Reagan had surgery for colon polyps. Dick Cheney has also taken over twice while George W. Bush had colonoscopies. This led to one of the best "Daily Show" reports of all time.
8. Dan Quayle represented which state while running for the office of vice president on George H.W. Bush's ticket?

Answer: Indiana

The 1992 VP debates were absolutely priceless with Quayle and Perot's Admiral Stockman.
9. Dick Cheney occupied which cabinet post before he became vice president?

Answer: Secretary of Defense

He presided over the military during the first Iraq conflict in the early 1990s. Ironically, during that time he wanted to kill many of the military programs that he chides Democrats for wanting to kill today.
10. Which former vice president was the first American to win the Nobel Peace Prize?

Answer: Theodore Roosevelt

Roosevelt was rewarded for his efforts in helping to end the Russian-Japanese conflict in 1906. Gore won in 2007 for his efforts to help stop global warming. Truman never won the award, and Burr pre-dates it by nearly 100 years.
