Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Pentagon is home to approximately how many workers?

Answer: 23,000

At times the building has over 30,000 people due to meetings, or other events, but the number of permanent staff is about 23,000.
2. When building the Pentagon over thirty miles of access highways were created.

Answer: True

Now with the current modifications that number is going to rise. Due to security concerns a PSB or Pentagon Secure Bypass is being constructed
3. Over 100,000 miles of phone line are inside the Pentagon.

Answer: True

Some are as old as the building itself and weren't upgraded to fiber-optic cable till 2003-04!
4. There are 26 miles of corridors in the Pentagon.

Answer: False

There is a lot but only 17.5 miles. The E ring is just short of a mile to walk around it, you have 4 other rings of smaller diameter, the smallest being the A-ring which is about 1/4 of a mile around. Multiply all that by 5 and add the 10 corridors as well and you quickly see how all that adds up.
5. The fifth floor was added at the last minute, it was never part of the original plan

Answer: True

Thats why there are no windows on the fifth floor on the outside, but the interior bays and corridors of the 5th floor have some windows.
6. The Pentagon was built on what?

Answer: A swamp

This swamp was also at one time an airport and dumpsite. The concrete used during the construction was made using sand from the boundary channel of the Potomac, which is due east of the building.
7. It took only 16 months to build the Pentagon

Answer: True

Sept 11th 1941 - January 15th 1943. Experts say it would take nearly four years to build the Pentagon today. The OSHA, EPA, and the numerous unions involved in modern construction didn't exist or played a very small role in 1941.
8. What date did construction begin?

Answer: September 11th, 1941

Yes, exactly 60 years before the terrorist attack. A very unfortunate coincidence.
9. As big as the Pentagon is, you can walk from any two points in the building in seven minutes.

Answer: True

If you walk fast you can do it in five! Most agencies use SPV's or self-propelled vehicles. You actually need a license, and speeding tickets are given if you exceed the 3 m.p.h. speed limit.
10. The Pentagon was designed to fit between existing roadways, and that is what determined its shape.

Answer: True

Originally it was a square with a corner cut off, but was refined. It also was to have had a skyscraper in the center but the location of National Airport prevented that.
