Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first lighthouse of Australia was the Macquarie Lighthouse built on Dunbar Head near Sydney Harbour. What was unusual about its architect Francis Greenway?

Answer: He was a convict.

Francis Greenway was an English architect who was charged with forgery and sent to Australia. Working under the New South Wales Governor, Lachlan Macquarie, Greenway designed several important structures including St James' Church and Hyde Park Barracks in Sydney apart from the Macquarie Lighthouse.

The original lighthouse was completed in 1818, however, the soft sandstone used in its construction began to give way soon after. A new lighthouse was constructed nearby in 1883 with the old structure being demolished shortly thereafter.
2. What is the name of the lighthouse to the west of the Isle of Wight in the English Channel? Sitting on this place would make you quite nervous.

Answer: Needles

The Needles are a tiny chalk peninsula to the west of the Isle of Wight. In 1786 Trinity House founded here a lighthouse to guide the ships to the safe passage to Wight.
The Lighthouse was fully automated in 1994.

The red herrings are all situated on the eastern shore of the Isle of Wight.
3. The Kopu Lighthouse is one of the oldest, still operating lighthouses in the world. Being the tallest of its kind on the Baltic Sea, which country were the Four Winds sailing to when guided by this structure?

Answer: Estonia

The Kopu Lighthouse is located on the island of Hiiumaa in Estonia. Having been completed in 1531, it is one of the oldest lighthouses still in use. Now a popular tourist attraction, the lighthouse has also featured on postage stamps.
4. The peninsular state of Johor is beset with six lighthouses, among which the Pulau Pisang Lights. Which country contains this state full of lighthouses?

Answer: Malaysia

Johor is the southernmost state in peninsular Malaysia. It is ruled by a sultan. Ships heading into the waters of Singapore are also guided by these lighthouses.
5. La Lanterna, the Lighthouse of Genoa, is one of the best known lighthouses in Italy. A symbol of the City of Genoa, which famous explorer had a relative who was one of its keepers?

Answer: Christopher Columbus

La Lanterna stands on the San Benigno hill at a height of 76 meters. While the date when a lighthouse was first constructed at this location is not known, some sources trace its existence right back to 1128. At different times in its history, the lighthouse has functioned as watchtower for the city and a prison for hostages.

Antonio Columbo, an uncle of Christopher Columbus, is listed as one of the keepers of the lighthouse in 1449.
6. Which of the following is *not* a lighthouse in Mumbai, India?

Answer: Chennai Lighthouse

Chennai Lighthouse is situated in the Madras district. The city which was named Madras by the Portuguese, bears now the name of Chennai. Chennai is situated on the east coast of India, while Mumbai is on the west coast.

Chennai lighthouse is a quite new lighthouse, built in 1976 and operating from January 1977.
7. In which country is Nosy Alanana Light, the tallest lighthouse in Africa, found?

Answer: Madagascar

Nosy Alanana Light is also known as Ile aux Prunes Light and is located one a small island in the Toamasina Province of Madagascar. At 60 meters, the structure is one meter taller than the Port Sa'id lighthouse in Egypt making it Africa's tallest lighthouses.
8. On which island of Canada do we find Cow Head Lighthouse on the west coast, and a lighthouse called Bull Head on the east coast?

Answer: Newfoundland

It may seem odd, but the same island shares a Bull Head and a Cow Head, both secured by a lighthouse. I seriously doubt these names were given by a Hindu explorer, to whom all cows and bulls are sacred.

Let's put aside all puns. The island Newfoundland and the Labrador peninsula form together the tenth and easternmost province of Canada. Both parts of the province have given their name to a dog breed, and the province is equipped with at least sixty lighthouses.

Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario are Canadian mainland provinces.
9. A Roman Catholic church, the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe, is regarded as the first lighthouse of Gibraltar.

Answer: True

Dedicated to the Catholic patroness of Gibraltar, the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe was consecrated in 1462. The light burning in the tower above the chapel served as a guide for ships sailing through the Strait of Gibraltar making the shrine the first lighthouse of Gibraltar. Sailors continued to be dependent on the shrine until the construction of the Europa Point Lighthouse in 1841.
10. Which of the following South African lighthouses is located on the southernmost tip of the African continent?

Answer: Cape Agulhas

Cape Agulhas is the southernmost tip of Africa and is considered to be the dividing point of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. The Cape Agulhas was constructed in 1848 and was based on the design of the legendary Lighthouse of Alexandria. In 1973 it was declared a national monument.
