Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Beef, for dinner

Answer: Carnicería

The butcher shop, or carnicería, is the best place to buy any kind of carne (meat) including ternera (veal or beef). The butcher himself is known as the carnicero. The first time I walked into a butcher's shop in Spain I was a little perturbed to see whole, skinned rabbit carcases on display!
2. Books, to read after dinner

Answer: Librería

It can be confusing to new Spanish-speakers to learn that a librería is a book store, and not a library. The latter is a biblioteca, overseen by a bibliotecario/a (librarian), and both are good places to get books (libros).
3. Bread, freshly baked

Answer: Panadería

You could buy packaged pan de molde (which is more likely to be sliced than mouldy) from a supermercado (supermarket) but a bakery (panadería) is the best place to get a stick of freshly baked bread with a crispy crust, perfect for making garlic bread or serving with tapas.
4. Candy, or sweets

Answer: Dulcería

Other names for a candy store are confitería or tienda de golosinas, but I have opted for the word that gives the idea that candy is sweet (dulce). Around Christmastime, the sweet almond and honey treat called turrón, can be found all over Spain.
5. Drumsticks (not the kind you eat)

Answer: Tienda de música

Baquetas, or palillos de tambor, to play that great drum solo you have in your head, can be purchased in a music store. If you are looking for the edible sort (muslo) try the supermercado or pollería (poultry store).
6. Hammer, to build some shelves for your new books

Answer: Ferretería

You will likely also want some nails (clavos) to go with your martillo (hammer) whilst you are in the hardware store/ironmonger's (ferretería). When I lived in Spain, many of my English neighbours referred to this store affectionately as "the Ferret".
7. Ice cream cone, to cool off

Answer: Heladería

I had a wonderful heladería just two doors from my home in Spain. Not only was their ice cream (helado) freshly made and wonderful, but they served a great cup of coffee as well. Other names for an ice cream store include paletería, from the word for popsicle (paleta) and nevería, from nieve (snow).
8. Shoes, to replace the worn out ones you are wearing

Answer: Zapatería

All this walking around the stores has taken a toll on your zapatos (shoes), so stop at the shoe store to try on some new ones. You could try some botas de vaquero (cowboy boots) if you are feeling bold!
9. Stuffed toy dog, to cuddle at night

Answer: Juguetería

Even grownups like to cuddle a stuffed toy sometimes, so visit the toy store (juguetería, or tienda de juguetes) and choose a peluche perro de juguete to take home with you. This type of dog is less expensive (menos caro) to look after than a real dog, and doesn't need to go walkies, either!
10. Watch battery, so you don't miss your bus home!

Answer: Joyería

Almost the only time I ever visit a jewellery store (joyería), whether in Spain or in Canada, is to have a new battery put in my watch by the jeweller (joyero). Now that your reloj (watch) has a new batería (battery) you can be sure of getting home in time for dinner (cena).
