Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Party" isn't the right word to describe these groups, as there is not much of a celebration. However the "Party! Party! Party! Party", as well as the "Sun Ripened Warm Tomato Party", ran in the 1989 election of which Australian district's Legislative Assembly?

Answer: Australian Capital Territory

The PPPP joke party surprisingly garnered 979 votes from the people (0.69% total), while the SRWT took home 1.17% of the vote. Due to the relaxed laws in the ACT regarding political parties, these two groups (as well as the Surprise Party), were allowed to field candidates.

The regulations changed after that election, mandating parties to have at least 100 delegates and a constitution before applying to run.
2. Ever had a feud with your landlord? Well, why not join the US "The Rent Is Too Damn High!" Party! The party is based out of which large American city, where rent is quite high?

Answer: New York City

The brainchild of Jimmy MacMillan, the party ran for mayor of New York City in 2005 and 2009, as well as New York governor and senator in 2010. MacMillan, the candidate for all three elections, finished fifth in the gubernational election, earning 40,000 votes.

The party aimed at winning "without a single vote from upstate New York" and featured a map of the state with an x through the north half on their website. MacMillan also stated during his campaign that "If you want to marry a shoe, I'll let you."
3. A satrical Canadian political party which undertakes if elected not to follow through on any of its promises, this Montreal-based party is represented by which "pointy" animal?

Answer: Rhinoceros

The first coming of the party was formed in 1963, and claimed Cornelius The First, a rhinoceros at the Montreal Granby Zoo, as its first president. The group also said that a rhino was an appropriate choice as politicians are "thick-skinned, slow-moving, dim-witted, can move fast as hell when in danger, and have large, hairy horns growing out of the middle of their faces." When new election rules came in 1993, the party was forced out after complaining.

The second coming was finalized in 2007 when they gained official status.

While legal issues, around the dissolution of the first party circulated, the party was known as neorhino (after Neo from the movie "Matrix").
4. Founded by comedian and actor Jacob Hauggard in 1979, the "Union of Conscientiously Work-Shy Elements" surprised everyone when Hauggard won a seat in what country's parliament in 1994?

Answer: Denmark

Hauggard's promises won over the hearts of Danish voters, to the tune of 23,000 votes in the 1994 Danish national election. The people wanted what he claimed, which was better weather, more bread for ducks in the park, better Christmas gifts, more Renaissance products available in IKEA, Nutella in Army food rations. Believe it or not, Hauggard came through on his duck nutrition plan, and the soldiers were treated to some Nutella.
5. Imagine if those Democrats and Republicans in the US decided to pick a candidate from a 12-man battle royale! The Extreme Wrestling Party operated in only one by-election in what Canadian province?

Answer: Newfoundland

Young Quentin Barboni beat out 11 other wrestler/politicians in Conception Bay South, Newfoundland in 1999 to become the first head. In a 2000 by-election in the riding of St. John's West, the party ran with candidate (and former WWF fighter) Ed White (known as Sailor White on the East Coast of Canada).

However, White had to run as an independent, as the CEWP was not a registered party with Elections Canada. Unlike other joke parties, the group released over 30 pages to the media on policy, and designated themselves as "left wing".

However, that one election was all the party ever attempted.
6. With the fall of communism in 1989, Poland quickly became a democratic nation. Over 100 parties quickly formed, including one particular satirical party that encouraged the drinking of what beverage?

Answer: Beer

The party was actually started with the aim of reducing alcoholism, by encouraging Poles to drink beer over vodka. The joke slowly died off, and the party began to form a platform. In the 1991 parliamentary election, the party claimed 16 seats, and won 2.97% of the vote. Once work got under way in the Polish sejm, the seriousness sunk in, and the party split in two and eventually dissolved.
7. Named after the famous event, the "Boston Tea Party" formed in 2006, with the slogan to "Time to Party like it's ______". What year, the year of the infamous protest, completes the slogan?

Answer: 1773

A branch of the Libertarian Party, the party campaigned to withdraw from world military outposts, legalize marijuana, and called for the end to the "war on poverty" and the "war on civil liberties". After naming a candidate to run in 2012, the party then held a second election to name a different candidate. The party then disbanded before the election day.
8. A joke political party in Sweden, Bosse Persson organized a political party with which cartoon character as its face?

Answer: Donald Duck

Known in Sweden as "Kalle Anka" in Sweden, the party received many "protest" write-in votes, enough at one point to be the ninth-highest party in Sweden. They scored 1535 votes in the 1991 election. The only catch in all of this, the party was never registered as an official political party with the Swedish Election Authority.

The platform was for wider sidewalks and free liquor for Swedes.
9. Would you vote for the "Two-Tailed Dog Party"? Why not? If you do, they promise free beer, eternal life, two sunsets per day, and world peace! What's not to like about this party? In what East European nation were they founded in 2006?

Answer: Hungary

The Hungarian "Two-Tailed Dog Party" also offers smaller gravitation, lower taxes, and to build a mountain on the Great Hungarian Plains. All candidates run on the name Istvan Nagy, as they are the most common first name and surname in Hungary. In election posters, Nagy is shown as a pooch, with the slogan "He is so cute, surely he doesn't want to steal".
10. Great Britain's "Miss Great Britain Party" features many candidates who have all done what?

Answer: Appeared in a Beauty Contest

Trying "To make Westminster sexy not sleazy", the party was founded in 2008 by Robert de Keyser, after he was let as go as chairman of the Miss Great Britain pageant. Supermodel Gemma Garrett ran in the 2008 by-election in the riding of Crewe and Nantwich. Using the slogan "Beauty for Britain" she came dead last with 113 votes (0.27% total).

In a separate race in 2008, Garrett garnered 521 votes (good enough for fifth out out of 26 candidates), the best showing by the party, which lost its registration in 2009.
