Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The oldest reliable records of women associated in an official capacity in the Coast Guard show them as ________ .

Answer: lighthouse keeper

The modern day Coast Guard is an amalgamation of several independent services such as the Lighthouse Service. Women worked as lighthouse keepers, with the first documented case in Old Field Point, NY (1826 - 1827). There were several other women, sometimes widows of the assigned lighthousekeeper, who served in the 1830's.

They would never have been allowed to serve on any ships, such as a cook or coxswain.
2. In World War II, the Coast Guard, as did many other services, had a major enlistment effort aimed at recruiting women, which was meant to free up men to serve in the combat areas. Organized into the Women's Reserve, what were they called?

Answer: SPARs

SPAR is an acronymn for "Semper Paratus - Always Ready", the Coast Guard motto. WAVE is Navy, WAAC is Army and WARCOG was a suggestion that thankfully was not accepted.
3. Who was the director of the SPARS during World War II and was later awarded the Legion of Merit?

Answer: Dorothy Stratton

Navy LT Dorothy Stratton (1899-2006), was also a former dean of women at Purdue University. She was appointed Coast Guard Women's Reserve Lieutenant Commander in 1942, and retired in 1946.
4. During World War II no woman in the Coast Guard, officer or enlisted, could issue an order to any male serviceman.

Answer: True

Navy LT Dorothy Stratton was quoted: "I am sometimes referred to as the commanding officer of the SPARs. Actually I had no command authority. All I had was power of persuasion ... I didn't even have authority over the enlisted man at the desk across the hall." The same restriction applied to women in the Naval Reserve.
5. In 1973, the Coast Guard began accepting women into active duty, and was the first of branch of the US Armed Forces to accept women into their military academy. Which year did the first female officer graduate from the Coast Guard Academy?

Answer: 1980

The first woman graduate from the Coast Guard Academy was Jean M. Butler; thirteen other women also graduate as part of the Academy's Class of 1980.
6. In 1977 the Coast Guard began assigning women to sea duty. These were the first mixed gender crews in the US Armed Forces. To which class of ships were the women assigned?

Answer: High Endurance Cutters

WHEC Gallatin and WHEC Morgenthau were the first two ships to receive female crew members. The Coast Guard has no medical ships or sub tenders. WHEC stands for High Endurance Cutter (the H stands for Hamilton class).
7. The Gold Lifesaving Medal is one of the most important and lauded medals the Coast Guard can award. The first female recipient was Ida Lewis. She was a ________ .

Answer: lighthouse keeper

Ida Lewis (1842-1911) was appointed a keeper in 1879. Starting in 1872, she stood station at Lime Rock for 39 year, and during her tenure she saved 18 people. The station was renamed Ida Lewis Light; even to this date a very rare honor, and the first time it had been done in U.S. history.
8. Are there any physical requirements for women in the Coast Guard boot camp?

Answer: yes

Yes, but some of the requirements are slightly less stringent or difficult for the bootcamp female.
9. The Coast Guard started attracting larger numbers of women into the ranks in the 1970's and decided to stop using Navy uniforms and create a fully Coast Guard women's uniform. A well-known American costume designer was invited to design this new uniform. Who was this designer?

Answer: Edith Head

Edith Head called the assignment a "highlight" in her career.
10. The different branches of US Armed Forces do bar women from serving in direct combat and other positions. What percentage of Coast Guard positions are available to women?

Answer: 100%

The Coast Guard has no job or position anywhere in the world that excludes women.
