Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which country's flag was solid green from 1971-2011?

Answer: Libya

The Green represented Islam, which they take very seriously in Libya apparently!
2. Which U.S. state flag contains a British Union Jack?

Answer: Hawaii

The Hawaiian flag was first created by King Kamehameha, who, after receiving both British and American flags as gifts during the War of 1812, decided to show his neutrality by borrowing aspects of both for his national flag. This flag was eventually adopted as the state flag, when Hawaii became a state in 1959.
3. Which of the following country's flags is not rectangular, but is shaped like a double pennant?

Answer: Nepal

4. Which country's flag contains the words 'Ordem E Progresso'?

Answer: Brazil

That means 'order and progress' in Portuguese, the offical language of Brazil.
5. What large letter formerly appeared on the flag of Rwanda?

Answer: R

The Rwandan flag was changed in 2002. It is now blue, yellow and green with a sun in the top right corner.
6. What color is the circle on the Japanese flag?

7. Which of the following flags does not contain a Union Jack (British flag)?

Answer: Monaco

Surprisingly, Monaco was never a British crown colony... it seems like every other place has been!
8. What symbol appears on the flag of Cyprus?

Answer: a map of Cyprus

The Cypriots chose this symbol not out of patriotism, but rather out of compromise. They sought a neutral symbol that both the Greek and Turkish sides of the island could agree upon, and the map fit the bill! The only other country to have had this in common was Cambodia (its flag contained a country map in the early 1990s).
9. Aside from the Vatican, which national flag is the only one that is a square?

Answer: Switzerland

The famous red cross flag! (Actually a white cross on a red background.)
10. How many stars appear on the flag of the People's Republic of China (mainland)?

Answer: 5

4 small ones and one large one.
