1. In which Asian culture is the festival of Chuseok celebrated during autumn?

Answer: Korean

Chuseok celebrated during the Autumn Equinox is a major harvest festival of Korea. The celebrations generally span over a period of three days with most Koreans returning to their hometowns to pay their respects to their deceased ancestors. Traditional food eaten during the festival includes songpyeon, a rice cake stuffed with sesame seeds, chestnuts, walnuts, black beans and honey, to name just a few of the possible ingredients and hangwa along with rice wines. Ganggangsullae, a folk dance whose origins can be traced back to over five thousand years, is performed by the women at night with the performance sometimes lasting up to dawn.
2. The Polish harvest festival of Dozynki is typically celebrated around which Catholic feast?

Answer: Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin

The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is celebrated on the 15th of August every year and commemorates the death of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and her bodily assumption into heaven.

During Dozynki, the peasants working on the fields owned by the rich landowners and members of the nobility, would make harvest wreaths out of grains, nuts and corn and present them to the land owners. Traditionally, these wreaths would be fashioned into a dome shaped crown and then decorated with flowers and ribbons.

Dozynki is a Slavic harvest festival and is also celebrated in Russia, Belarus and the Czech Republic apart from Poland.
3. Being a primarily agrarian community, various harvest festivals are celebrated in different parts of India at different times during the year based on the crop growing patterns. Which of these festivals was traditionally celebrated in the northern part of India?

Answer: Baisakhi

Baisakhi is celebrated in the month of April in the northern state of Punjab and marks the beginning of the harvest season for the rabi crops grown in winter. Apart from offering prayers for the harvest, the day is celebrated by visiting village fairs and taking part in the traditional dances of bhangra and gidda.

Onam, Pongal and Bhogi are harvest festivals celebrated in south India.
4. Which of the following Jewish festivals, while having a religious significance, is also a celebration of the harvest gathering?

Answer: Sukkot

Sukkot literally translates to "booths", referring to the temporary and possibly crude dwellings in which the Jews lived during the forty years they wandered in the desert on their way to the Promised Land. The festival is celebrated over a period of 7-8 days. It also marks the beginning of the autumn harvest period and is a time for thanksgiving for the bountiful produce.
5. The Thanksgiving festival of North America is generally believed to have originated as a day to show gratitude for the harvest reaped. Is it celebrated on the same date in both Canada and the United States of America?

Answer: No

Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October while the Americans celebrate it on the fourth Thursday of November. While the first celebration of the festival in both places may not be accurately and completely documented, over time it came to be celebrated as a day of giving thanks for the harvest of the previous year which has now become a day for giving thanks for all things.
6. Which ancient empire celebrated the harvest festival of Mehrgan?

Answer: Persian

Jashn-e Mehrgan originated as a festival to give thanks to the sun god Mithra for the abundant autumn harvest. Celebrations of this festival can be traced back up to the 4th century BC. It was one of the prime festivals of ancient Persia and was celebrated with much fervour in the city of Persepolis. Gifts were sent for the king from various parts of the empire.

The festival continues to be celebrated in modern day Iran and among the Iranian and Zoroastrian diaspora, though on a much smaller scale.
7. The harvest of which fruit is celebrated in the Mendoza province of Argentina?

Answer: Grape

While this type of harvest festival has been taking place in Mendoza since the seventeenth century, the first official Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia (Grape Harvest Festival) was celebrated in 1936. The Archbishop of Mendoza blesses the first grapes of the season by sprinkling them with holy water on the last Sunday of the month of February.

The celebration continues for a week ending with a fireworks display.
8. Homowo, a harvest festival celebrated by the ethnic Ga people of Ghana, is held in remembrance of a famine that had once struck the land.

Answer: True

Homowo is celebrated in May at the time of sowing of the millet crops. The crops are sown by the traditional priests of the Ga people before the start of the rainy season. The origin of this festival is traced to a time in the pre-colonial history of the tribe when the land was struck by a severe famine due to a drought.

When the rains resumed at their normal schedule in the next year, the people celebrated the harvest they had reaped. Homowo translates to 'jeering at hunger' in the native Ga language.
9. In which country would you find the town of Magione which holds an annual festival for the olive harvest?

Answer: Italy

The formal celebration of this festival began relatively recently in 2001. Magione is a small town located around 15 miles west of Perugia, the capital of the Umbria region in central Italy. Held in the month of November over a period of two days, it is celebrated in conjunction with the feast of St. Clement, the patron saint of blacksmiths. Food markets and other forms of festivities are held at the end of which Mass is celebrated where the priest blesses the olive oil.

The highlight of the festival is a medieval banquet held in 12th century castle.
10. During which month is the harvest festival of Lammas celebrated in parts of the United Kingdom?

Answer: August

The festival has its origins in the Pagan festivals celebrated during Celtic times. Lammas (derived from the word 'loaf mass') is a celebration of the wheat harvest. It is celebrated on the 1st of August in the Northern hemisphere and the 1st of February in the Southern hemisphere.

In medieval times, the tenants tilling the fields presented the first harvest to their landlords at this time. According to tradition, a loaf of bread is also taken to the church to be blessed.
