Question 1 of 10
1. 'Christmas time is here, by golly,
Disapproval would be folly,
Deck the halls with hunks of holly,
Fill the cup and don't say when.'

Christmas is celebrated all around the world, but not always on December 25th! Some countries follow the Orthodox calendar, for instance, and celebrate it on 7th January instead. In which African country, located on the Horn of Africa, is the Christmas celebration known as 'Ganna', and preceded by a fast?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. 'Spring is here, suh-puh-ring is here,
Life is skittles and life is beer.
I think the loveliest time of the year is the spring!'

The characters in the above song celebrate the coming of spring by poisoning pigeons in the park, but others prefer to see it as a time of birth, new life and fertility. Which neo-pagan and Wiccan festival marks the beginning of spring?
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. 'National Brotherhood Week, it's National Brotherhood Week,
It's National Everyone-Smile-At-One-Another-Hood Week,
Be nice to people who are inferior to you,
It's only for a week, so have no fear;
Be grateful that it doesn't last all year!'

National Brotherhood Week is a thing of the past, but Friendship Day is a secular holiday that exists in some countries. In which South American country is it known as 'Día del Amigo' or 'Día de la Amistad', and celebrated on 30th July?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. 'Pollution, pollution,
They got smog and sewage and mud,
Turn on your tap
And get hot and cold running crud.'

Earth Day was created as a response to an oil well blowout in Santa Barbara, California, which causing over 3 million gallons of oil to be spilled, killing thousands of birds and animals. Peace activist John McConnell first came up with the concept at a UNESCO conference, but Senator Gaylord Nelson was the one who came up with the date of 22nd April. In which year was Earth Day first celebrated in the US?
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. 'Do whatever steps you want, if
You have cleared them with the Pontiff
Everybody say his own
Kyrie Eleison,
Doing the Vatican Rag!'

There are so many Saints' Days in Catholic tradition, it would take forever to name them all. For this question, I'm going to focus on a Saint's Day celebrated in Italy on 19th March, when it is traditional to eat fava beans and wear red. The saint in question is the patron saint of carpenters and fathers, being quite a well-known example of both things in Christian tradition. Who is he?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. 'About a maid I'll sing a song, sing rickety-tickety tin,
About a maid I'll sing a song,
She didn't have her family long,
Not only did she do them wrong,
She did every one of them in.'

When we think of Ireland and holidays, the day that most likely springs to mind is St Patrick's Day, but in Northern Ireland, a celebration among the Ulster Protestant community takes place on 12th July. What event does it commemorate?
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. 'When it's fiesta time in Guadalajara,
How I long to be back once again in old Mexico.'

On which rather spooky date does Day of the Dead begin in Mexico?
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. 'Do you remember the night I held you so tight,
As we danced to the Wiener Schnitzel Waltz?
The music was gay, and the setting was Viennese,
Your hair wore some roses (or perhaps they were peonies).'

In many Christian countries, carnivals are held during Shrovetide, the period leading up to Lent, and Austria - home of Wiener schnitzel - is one of them. What is the name for Carnival in Austria?
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. 'I hold your hand in mine, dear,
I press it to my lips,
I take a healthy bite from your dainty fingertips.
My joy would be complete, dear,
If you were only here,
But still I keep your hand as a precious souvenir.'

How romantic! The festival most associated with romance, particularly in the US, is Valentine's Day, but in Japan, there's a sequel day that happens a month later, involving the giving of chocolate. What is this day called?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. 'I'm spending Chanukah in Santa Monica,
Wearing sandals, lighting candles by the sea.
I spent Shavuos in East St Louis,
A charming spot, but clearly not the spot for me.'

Which of these is NOT a custom linked with Chanukah?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Christmas time is here, by golly, Disapproval would be folly, Deck the halls with hunks of holly, Fill the cup and don't say when.' Christmas is celebrated all around the world, but not always on December 25th! Some countries follow the Orthodox calendar, for instance, and celebrate it on 7th January instead. In which African country, located on the Horn of Africa, is the Christmas celebration known as 'Ganna', and preceded by a fast?

Answer: Ethiopia

On the day before Ganna, it is customary to fast all day. On the day itself, Ethiopian Christians go to an early morning mass, followed by a massive Christmas feast. Instead of turkey and sprouts, you're more likely to see wat (a spicy meat stew), or injera (a type of flatbread) on the Christmas menu. Timkat, or Epiphany, takes place twelve days later on 19th January, and is observed with processions and reenactment of the baptism of Jesus.

(Lyrics from 'A Christmas Carol'.)
2. 'Spring is here, suh-puh-ring is here, Life is skittles and life is beer. I think the loveliest time of the year is the spring!' The characters in the above song celebrate the coming of spring by poisoning pigeons in the park, but others prefer to see it as a time of birth, new life and fertility. Which neo-pagan and Wiccan festival marks the beginning of spring?

Answer: Imbolc

Traditionally celebrated in February, Imbolc - also known as Candlemas - celebrates the coming of spring, light returning to the world, and rebirth. In some Irish traditions, it is associated with St Brigid, patron saint of infants and midwives, and the Celtic fertility goddess Brigid. Colours such as white, silver and green are also associated with the festival, representing purity and new plant life.

(Lyrics from 'Poisoning Pigeons in the Park'.)
3. 'National Brotherhood Week, it's National Brotherhood Week, It's National Everyone-Smile-At-One-Another-Hood Week, Be nice to people who are inferior to you, It's only for a week, so have no fear; Be grateful that it doesn't last all year!' National Brotherhood Week is a thing of the past, but Friendship Day is a secular holiday that exists in some countries. In which South American country is it known as 'Día del Amigo' or 'Día de la Amistad', and celebrated on 30th July?

Answer: Paraguay

The idea of an International Friendship Day was proposed by Dr Ramon Arterio Bracho at a dinner party in Paraguay in 1958, as a way of fostering peace, much like the original National Brotherhood Week in the US. It's celebrated on different days in different countries, but in Paraguay, it's on 30th July. Día del Amigo is usually observed by groups of friends going out for a meal and giving each other gifts. Sometimes these gifts are given anonymously, kind of like a 'Secret Santa'.

(Lyrics from 'National Brotherhood Week'.)
4. 'Pollution, pollution, They got smog and sewage and mud, Turn on your tap And get hot and cold running crud.' Earth Day was created as a response to an oil well blowout in Santa Barbara, California, which causing over 3 million gallons of oil to be spilled, killing thousands of birds and animals. Peace activist John McConnell first came up with the concept at a UNESCO conference, but Senator Gaylord Nelson was the one who came up with the date of 22nd April. In which year was Earth Day first celebrated in the US?

Answer: 1970

The first Earth Day was on 22nd April 1970, a year after the Santa Barbara blowout, and was marked by environmental protests across the US. Gaylord Nelson specifically chose 22nd April as it did not fall during exam time, spring break, or the festivals of Easter and Passover. Since then, it has gone global and is now observed in 192 countries. On the 20th anniversary in 1990, a group of mountaineers from around the world collected over 2 tons trash left behind on Mount Everest, while in 2017, the March for Science took place on Earth Day.

(Lyrics from 'Pollution'.)
5. 'Do whatever steps you want, if You have cleared them with the Pontiff Everybody say his own Kyrie Eleison, Doing the Vatican Rag!' There are so many Saints' Days in Catholic tradition, it would take forever to name them all. For this question, I'm going to focus on a Saint's Day celebrated in Italy on 19th March, when it is traditional to eat fava beans and wear red. The saint in question is the patron saint of carpenters and fathers, being quite a well-known example of both things in Christian tradition. Who is he?

Answer: St Joseph

Fava beans are associated with St Joseph, due to an Italian legend where the people of Sicily prayed to him for rain. When the rain came, the people celebrated with a feast, and as fava beans were the crop that saved them from starving, it is traditional to eat them on St Joseph's Day and place them on altars. Other traditional St Joseph's Day foods in Italy include meals containing breadcrumbs (to represent sawdust) and a fried pastry called a zeppola.

(Lyrics from 'The Vatican Rag'.)
6. 'About a maid I'll sing a song, sing rickety-tickety tin, About a maid I'll sing a song, She didn't have her family long, Not only did she do them wrong, She did every one of them in.' When we think of Ireland and holidays, the day that most likely springs to mind is St Patrick's Day, but in Northern Ireland, a celebration among the Ulster Protestant community takes place on 12th July. What event does it commemorate?

Answer: William of Orange's victory at the Battle of the Boyne

Known as the 'Glorious Twelfth' among the Ulster Protestant community, 12th July is not only the anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, but also the anniversary of the Glorious Revolution, when King James II was overthrown by William of Orange (hence the orange sashes worn by 'Orangemen') in 1688. It is usually celebrated by parades with marching bands, and bonfires are lit the night before. Tensions have flared between the Catholic and Protestant communities in Northern Ireland as a result of Union flags being flown near Catholic neighbourhoods.

(Lyrics from 'The Irish Ballad'.)
7. 'When it's fiesta time in Guadalajara, How I long to be back once again in old Mexico.' On which rather spooky date does Day of the Dead begin in Mexico?

Answer: 31st October

Day of the Dead begins on the same day as Halloween, when people celebrate the lives of their lost loved ones with prayers and visits to graves, sometimes bringing the favourite food and drinks of the deceased. Some families have private altars called 'ofrendas', where they place sugar skulls, or calaveras, Aztec marigolds, and pictures of the dead person. One particularly iconic symbol of Day of the Dead is La Calavera Catrina, a skeletal woman in a big fancy hat, based on a cartoon criticising native Mexicans who adopted European dress.

(Lyrics from 'In Old Mexico'.)
8. 'Do you remember the night I held you so tight, As we danced to the Wiener Schnitzel Waltz? The music was gay, and the setting was Viennese, Your hair wore some roses (or perhaps they were peonies).' In many Christian countries, carnivals are held during Shrovetide, the period leading up to Lent, and Austria - home of Wiener schnitzel - is one of them. What is the name for Carnival in Austria?

Answer: Fasching

Fasching, or Fast as it is called in German-speaking Switzerland, runs from 11th January to Shrove Tuesday. On Shrove Tuesday, Fasching parades take place, with plenty of crazy outfits and marching bands. A popular cake associated with Fasching is the Faschingskrapfen, which is a jam doughnut with apricot jam, covered in icing sugar. Some local Austrian customs include throwing glowing logs from a hill (Tyrol) and dancing clowns wearing sequinned costumes, who throw oranges and nuts to children in the crowd (Ausseerland).

(Lyrics from 'The Wiener Schnitzel Waltz'.)
9. 'I hold your hand in mine, dear, I press it to my lips, I take a healthy bite from your dainty fingertips. My joy would be complete, dear, If you were only here, But still I keep your hand as a precious souvenir.' How romantic! The festival most associated with romance, particularly in the US, is Valentine's Day, but in Japan, there's a sequel day that happens a month later, involving the giving of chocolate. What is this day called?

Answer: White Day

White Day is on 28th March and is observed by men giving chocolate to women. On Valentine's Day in Japan, it is customary for women to give chocolate to men - 'giri-choco' (courtesy chocolate) to male friends, and 'honmei-choco' (chocolate of love) to the objects of their affection. As well as chocolate, it's also traditional for men to give women white gifts such as cookies or marshmallows. The custom first began in 1978 in Japan, and was started by the National Confectionery Industry Association.

(Lyrics from 'I Hold Your Hand in Mine'.)
10. 'I'm spending Chanukah in Santa Monica, Wearing sandals, lighting candles by the sea. I spent Shavuos in East St Louis, A charming spot, but clearly not the spot for me.' Which of these is NOT a custom linked with Chanukah?

Answer: Eating cheesecake and studying Torah

During Chanukah, it's customary to give Chanukah gelt / gold chocolate coins to children as a present, based on an old custom of children giving money to their teachers as a thank-you present. Foods such as doughnuts and latkes, which are fried in oil, represent the oil that burned for eight days. The top in question is a dreidel (which Lehrer also mentions in the song), a tiny four-sided top with Hebrew letters on each side. (Eating cheesecake - or other dairy products - and studying Torah is a Shavuot custom.)

(Lyrics from 'I'm Spending Chanukah in Santa Monica'.)
