Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to the series, who is our hero-brave, strong and faithful to Allah?

Answer: Ertugrul

Ertugrul is a real figure from Turkish history who has reached almost mythic status. He is pictured on coins and monuments although few facts are actually known about him. According to tradition he is the son of Suleyman Shah and father of Osman. Osman is acknowledged as the founder of what would become the Ottoman Empire.

It is interesting to note that Turkish television tried to do a series about Osman but this proved too politically charged to be successful. Ertugrul has been a tremendous hit, however.
2. Of what tribe is Suleyman Shah, Ertugrul's father, who is the "Bey" or lord?

Answer: Kayi

The term "Oghuz", which is referenced in "Resurrection:Ertugrul" many times, has been used to refer to groups likely to be the forbearers of the Turks since 220 BCE. By 800 CE it was consistently applied to two loose confederations of tribes: The Grey Arrows (which included the Kayi, Bayat and Doger tribes) and the Three Arrows (which included the Kinik tribe).

The term "Turk" or "Turkmen" was generally used to refer specifically to those Oghuz tribes who followed Islam.
3. Ertugrul falls in love with a woman he rescues early in the narrative. What is her name?

Answer: Halime

Halime is a captive, along with her father Numan and her brother Yigit. Although they claim to be merely merchants taken hostage, their real value to their captives is revealed later.

Gokce and Selcan are sisters, raised by Ertugrul's parents after they are orphaned.

Hayme is usually referred to as Mother Hayme and is Suleman Shah's wife, mother of Ertugrul. She has also taken on almost mythic status in Turkish lore. There are statues to her and her tomb is a revered site.
4. The hierarchy of which group of Crusader Knights, founded originally to protect pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land, form the main antagonists in the first season of "Resurrection:Ertugrul"?

Answer: Knights Templar

Founded in 1119, the Templars eventually amassed great power and wealth from generous patrons. Probably for financial and political reasons, they were opposed by Philip IV of France who great exerted pressure on the Pope. In 1312 Clement V responded with a series of papal bulls, dissolving the order on the (alleged and probably false) grounds of sodomy, magic, and heresy.

Knights Hospitaller exist through modern times as The Sovereign Military Order of Malta (based in Rome) and 4 non-Catholic orders claim origin from this order as well in Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany and the UK.

The Brothers of the Sword were an order concerned with crusades mostly in the Northeastern Baltic.

And the Knight of the Round Table, if they existed, were in England.
5. When Ertugrul's parents decide he should be married, to whom is he engaged?

Answer: Gokce

Gokce has loved Ertugrul since they were children but it is unrequited. He thinks of her as his little sister and only has eyes for Halime. Still, he is a dutiful son and cannot defy his parents outright, causing a conundrum for our hero.

Selcan is his sister-in-law, married to his brother Gondogdu. She is also Gokce's sister. Hayme is his mother. Leila is the Sister of El-Aziz, the Sultan of Aleppo.
6. What secret is revealed about Halime and her family, explaining why they were being held captive by the Templars?

Answer: They are high ranking members of the Seljuk Sultanate.

The Seljuk Empire, a Turko-Persian dynasty, lasted from 1037-1194 when it was gradually fragmented into a series of smaller states, including the Anatolian Beyliks (consisting mostly of Oghuz tribes in the "Grey Arrow" group). It is revealed that Halime's father, Numan, is a shezade or Prince from the Kinik or Seljuk line. This is important in Osman's claims to leadership of the Ottomans in the future as he will be able to claim descent from great Seljuk Dynasty.

Phillip of France WAS instrumental in the downfall of the Templars but much later and they were set on recovering the relics lost from the Temple but these had nothing to do with Halime.
7. Who does Ertugrul end up married to?

Answer: Halime

As mentioned earlier in the quiz information, Hayme is Ertugrul's mother and Selcan is his sister-in-law. Although he was initially promised to Gokce, both his parents and Gokce come to realize that the love between Halime and Ertugrul is too strong to be resisted and they concede to the marriage. Ertugrul's parents seem very happy with the arrangement but Gokce continues to pine for her unrequited love.
8. There is another pair of star crossed lovers in "Resurrection:Ertugrul" besides Halime and Ertugrul. The woman is Aykiz, daughter of Wild Demir and thought of as a "spiritual" member of Ertugrul's family. Who is the love of Aykiz's life?

Answer: Turgut

Turgut and Aykiz have been in love since childhood when our story opens and plan to marry when the tribe moves to their winter home. Many trials and tribulations occur before this comes to pass.

Turgut, Bamsi, and Dogan compose a trio of orphans found by Ertugrul as a young boy and raised within his home. As such they compose his faithful Alps (brave warriors) who would give their lives for him.

Hamza is one of Gondogdu's Alps.
9. This large city is in Syria and was in the news a great deal in 2016 due to intense fighting there during the Civil War. Near what large city do the Kayi Nomad tent find their winter home initially?

Answer: Aleppo

After some struggle the Kayi were given permission to stay on land near Aleppo by El-Aziz in thanks for Ertugrul's help ridding him of Templars infiltrating his government.

Aleppo was first settled in 5000BCE and has been one of the major cities of the area ever since. It was the largest city in Syria in 2010, before the Civil War, but saw such intense fighting that its population had dropped from 4.6 million (2010) to 1.8 million (2017) through various means.

Damascus was the largest city in Syria in 2017.
Beirut is in Lebanon and is quite distant from the lands where our story takes place.
Constantinople (now Istanbul) is in modern day Turkey but lies on the Bosporus, thousands of miles distant from the area where this part of our story takes place, which is very near the current border of Turkey and Syria in the south east.
10. There are several scenes where the children of the tent sit down to hear the stories of their ancestors. Who is the storyteller for these lessons?

Answer: Wild Demir

It is never really explained why it is Wild Demir's assignment to teach the children but the actor who portrays him, Mehmet Çevik, does an extraordinary job. Even though one is reliant on the captioning for the content, the stories come alive when he tells them.

These scenes are some of my favorites because they provide valuable history and context for the rest of the series. Although the Original audience probably already knows these stories, it is wonderful that the producers have included them for those of us who do not!
