I agree, Lesley. They use that phrase to attempt to put across some sort of moral superiority.

Yes it is, it's moral superiority! Only in their happy little heads, of course. The rest of the world just thinks they're mannerless oafs, :(

Funny but It's the "At the end of the day" one that really annoys me. One of my brothers uses it And as he gets drunk he uses it over and over!
At the end of the day this is seriously annoying :)

That one is really annoying,Robin. But I have a strategy! As soon as the ejit spouts those 'six annoying words',before they can make their point, chime in with "It Gets Dark". Usually works for me,anyway! :))

How's about a phrase meant to be polite, but often sounds otherwise.

"EXCUSE me", as person pushes past you.

I have been known to reply, "Is that a request or an order"?

I don't generally mind banaal phrases because the art of conversation is quite a messy one. I know I use a few word fillers, although I generally don't say much to begin with.

I'm not fond of 'I don't mean to be rude...' or 'not being funny, but...' because they try to sugar coat what is probably rude, and I don't like that. Bit like when people equate 'being honest' to being mean to everyone.

Blood: I've yet to hear anything polite that follows, 'no offense, but....'. If I was truly concerned that something I was going to say might be offensive to the listener, I'd choose to keep my mouth shut instead. We can't help what we think, but we CAN control what falls out of our mouths....usually.
There have been a few occasions in my life where I uttered the accidental double entendre and embarrassed myself....to the amusement of others. (Especially those with dirty minds) However, the lead-in of "no offense, but...." is proof of premeditation on the part of the speaker.

Turbo, the instance I was thinking of was when someone lit a cigarette in a no smoking area. The person I was with said, "No offence, but this is a no smoking zone." The guilty party was very apologetic as she hadn't seen the sign and no offence was taken!

There are times when this is justified!

Many times a Card of Thanks will start with the phrase "Words Cannot Express" , then continue ad nauseum with Words , usually an awful lot of them!

"You gotta sec?"

I haven't 'gotta' anything.

What the heck is a 'sec'? If it means 'second', I have several.

Mother Goose............So why not, "Get out of my way" ! Lol

In differing vein, I was in a foul mood anyhow, person standing chatting to friend and blocking aisle. I pushed past.
"Don't you usually say excuse me"?, she complained waspishly.
"Not usually. No", I replied. Lol

If you said that to an Australian, you'd probably provoke the response, "Why, what did you do?"
