"It is what it is."

Basically, a shorter way of saying "I have nothing helpful to contribute, but don't want to stop talking yet."

When people (politicians are especially prone to this) start sentences with "Clearly". It means this is unarguable, and it is meant to forestall any possible challenge or disagreement with what they are about to say. It closes down debate and means this is so certain, don't ask me for facts and figures to prove it. "Clearly", "clearly" is a useful phrase for those seeking to avoid scrutiny of their assertions. (You see what I did there. I expect no disagreement now).

hekawi, I've just thought of some more

"To be honest"
"I won't lie to you"

My reaction is "I wasn't expecting you to lie or be dishonest to me until you said you wouldn't do it, which now makes me suspect that you do normally do it"

Lucky Lady, I'm glad you agreed. "Clearly" you are a wide woman.

I assume you meant wise and not wide woman?

Maybe I should create a thread for "Most Embarrassing Typo".

Mix, your 'typo' made my day.

I am a wise, wild woman.

AWESOME!

"First world problems".....

Firstly, I'm not sure about dividing the world up into sections like that.
Secondly - I understand "First world" and "third world", does anyone know what constitutes the second world?

Thirdly, I live in the so-called first world so I am likely to have "first world problems". Yes, I know I'm lucky not to have to walk for miles every day to collect water, but I'm still entitled to have a moan occasionally!

I understand that the second world is (or was) the former Soviet Union and some East European countries, presumably on the basis that as (former) communist countries, their conditions were different from the first world and the third world because while they were not as rich or developed as the first world, they were also not as poor and undeveloped as the third and their system of wealth distribution was different.

"Having said that" bugs the life out of me. Why does anyone have to tell us he/she has just said something we obviously just heard?

Pompous twit.

Interesting, mix. I had always believed that "third world" referred to those places that weren't the "old world" (Europe) or the "new world" (North America), i.e., Africa, South America, Asia, and the Pacific Islands, all more or less backwards in economic development when the term was first promulgated.

Hairy Bear, you are right about the third world. I was talking about the second world. Logically if there's a third world and a first world, there should be a second world. Someone raised a question about what is the second world.

Creedy, I've some sympathy with "having said that" because it's a way of preparing the listener for hearing something in seeming contradiction to what's just been said, or at least something on the other side of the argument - a bit like "one the one hand this", "on the other hand that".

But it is a bit of a cliche

It is not a phrase, but I find using myself instead of I or me, in a faux humble way extremely annoying.
