quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Geordi La Forge was born blind.

Answer: True

Yes, Geordi was born blind. He was not stricken blind because of an accident, or because of a disease - it was due to a birth defect. In order to provide him with a measure of sight, he was given his first VISOR (Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement) at the age of five. It didn't provide him with vision in the same way that everyone else had, but rather allowed him to detect signals across the entire electromagnetic spectrum between 1 Hz and 100,000 THz.

Question by reedy
2. What was the name of the high school Geordi attended? (Hint: Named after a famous historical person in the "Star Trek" universe. The words 'high school' are not required in the answer).

Answer: Zefram Cochrane

Zefram Cochrane was the person who invented the warp drive. In the movie "First Contact", the Borg travelled back in time to try and prevent Cochrane's first warp flight. The Borg were successful in damaging Cochrane's ship, the Phoenix, and Picard assigned La Forge and an engineering crew to ensure 'history' happened as expected. It was whilst they were repairing the Phoenix that Geordi revealed that his high school was named after Zefram, which freaked Cochrane out!

Question by Daddy19
3. Geordi's best friend on the Enterprise-D was Data. They spent a lot of time together, including various adventures on the holodeck. Which character from the mind of Arthur Conan Doyle did Geordi play on more than one occasion?

Answer: Dr. John Watson

Geordi took on the role of Dr. Watson in the 2nd season episode, "Elementary, Dear Data", and then again in the 6th-season episode, "Ship in a Bottle".

In the first episode featuring Holmes and Watson, the computer was instructed to create a scenario and a villain capable of defeating Date, and subsequently made Professor Moriarty self-aware, and capable of affecting the entire Enterprise, and not just the holodeck. The later episode "Ship in a Bottle" brought Moriarty back, and the crew had to find a new solution to deal with the villain.

Question by reedy
4. When La Forge first began his assignment on the Enterprise-D, what position did he fill?

Answer: Conn officer

Upon his promotion to lieutenant in the year 2365 (the series began in 2364), La Forge transferred from the command division to the operations division. He was subsequently appointed the Enterprise-D's chief engineer. It only took one more year for another promotion (to the rank of lieutenant commander).

Question by reedy
5. In the fifth-season episode "I, Borg", Geordi has the opportunity to work with a damaged Borg drone that called itself "Third of Five". What name did Geordi suggest for the drone as a 'human' designation?

Answer: Hugh

Starfleet planned to use Hugh to infect the Borg collective with a killing virus, but after Hugh exhibited self-awareness and emotions, they decided not to go through with the deadly plan.

Question by reedy
6. In the alternate universe, engineering safeguards were not as stringent as in the Federation, as a result Geordi is seen in the engine room with a scarred faced caused by plasma burns.

Answer: False

There was no episode of the "Star Trek" universe in which the crew of the Enterprise-D appeared. As a result, the statement is false, however Diane Duane wrote a novel entitled "Dark Mirror" in which the mirror universe features.

In "Star Trek: Enterprise", Commander Tucker has a scarred face in the two-part episode "In A Mirror, Darkly".

Question by Daddy19
7. In the episode "The Next Phase", with which crew member did Geordi disappear as a result of a transporter accident?

Answer: Ro Laren

Geordi and Ro were transporting back to the Enterprise from a Romulan ship when the transporter chief loses their pattern and as far as the crew are concerned, they have died. Actually, they had materialised back on the ship, but were out of phase with the rest of the crew which meant they couldn't be seen.

Even though they are out of phase, they manage to get Data to realise what has happened and he manages to bring them back into phase... right in the middle of their own memorial service!

Question by Daddy19
8. Which of the following ships did La Forge serve on prior to his assignment to the USS Enterprise-D?

Answer: Both of these

Geordi's first assignment after graduating from Starfleet Academy was to the USS Victory under the captaincy of Zimbata. Some time after that, La Forge was assigned to the USS Hood under Captain Robert DeSoto (at the same time that Riker was a member of the crew).

Question by reedy
9. In the alternate future experienced by Picard in the episode "All Good Things", Geordi is married to Leah and has three children.

Answer: True

We find this information out shortly after Picard first visits the future. He was tending to his vineyard when Geordi approached him and offered to help, noting that Leah had taught him about growing plants. Picards reaction to this was to enquire how Geordi's three children, Alandra, Bret and Sidney were.

Question by Daddy19
10. In which 4th season episode did La Forge find himself slowly being transformed into an alien, along with the other members of an away team he had been part of five years previously?

Answer: Identity Crisis

In the episode "Identity Crisis", Geordi learns that some of the members of the away team from the mission five years previous have disappeared, abandoning their posts; only he and one other officer (Leijten) are left. Dr. Crusher eventually learns that a parasite from the planet of the away trip (Tarchannen III) is slowly transforming their bodies into another species - one that is invisible to the naked eye. In the end, they manage to save both La Forge and Leijten.

Question by reedy
11. At some stage between 2371 ("Generations") and 2373 ("First Contact"), Geordi stopped using the VISOR and had replaced them with ocular implants.

Answer: True

Geordi was first offered the opportunity to replace the VISOR with ocular implants by Doctor Pulaski in the second series of "TNG", however Geordi decided against this believing that the implants would not allow him to see as well as with the VISOR.

Ignoring any glimpses at the future, we first see Geordi with implants in "First Contact". No explanation was offered as to why he had chosen to replace the VISOR.

Question by Daddy19
12. After the Enterprise-E was attacked by the So'Na in "Insurrection", what did Geordi tell Commander Riker they were out of?

Answer: Warp Cores

The So'Na had detonated a banned subspace weapon and Geordi had ejected the warp core and detonated it to try and prevent the subspace shockwave from hitting the ship. Needless to say, this was something they could only do once and Riker had to improvise to try and win the battle.

Question by Daddy19
13. What effect did the rejuvenating properties of the Ba'ku planet have on Geordi in "Star Trek: Insurrection"?

Answer: His optic nerves regenerated.

After spending some time on the planet, Geordi went to Dr. Crusher complaining of pain in his eyes. Dr. Crusher discovered that his optic nerves had regenerated and she removed his implants so that he could see normally. Unfortunately, it did not last, and in "Nemesis" he had to wear the implants again.

Question by reedy
14. Geordi first had not met Captain Picard until he transferred aboard the Enterprise-D.

Answer: False

When Geordi is believed to be dead in the episode "The Next Phase", Picard recounted a story of a previous meeting he had with La Forge. They had both been travelling together in a shuttlecraft and Picard had made a comment about the engine. Geordi pulled an all-nighter, undertaking maintenance on parts of the shuttle. As a result, Picard knew he wanted him to be a part of his next crew.

Question by Daddy19
15. In the "Voyager" episode "Timeless", the Voyager crew's experiment with a new quantum slipstream drive leaves only Kim and Chakotay alive in the Delta Flyer while Voyager crashes. When they try to change the timeline fifteen years later to avert the disaster, Captain La Forge tries to stop them from doing so. What ship was La Forge the captain of?

Answer: USS Challenger

Kim and Chakotay manage to use a Borg temporal transmitter to send a message back in time to Seven of Nine, allowing their younger selves to avert the disaster. While they are working to do that, Captain La Forge, under the authority of the Federation, takes action to stop them, firing on the Delta Flyer and eventually capturing it with the tractor beam. Kim and Chakotay escape the beam, but at the cost of a warp core breach.
