1. Who appeared and told Samson's parents that their son would grow up and deliver Israel from the Philistines?

Answer: an angel

Before Samson was born, his mom and dad had tried very hard to have children and could not. They were super happy when an angel brought them the news that they would have a son. The angel told them that their son would deliver the Israelites from their enemies, the Philistines. God had heard the Israelites' prayers and had decided to do something about it. (Judges 13)
2. Samson grew up to be very strong. What animal did he kill with his bare hands when it tried to attack him?

Answer: a lion

When Samson took a trip, a lion tried to attack and kill him. Samson grabbed the lion with his bare hands and ripped him apart. Later when Samson returned after his trip he found the lion with a beehive inside it. Samson ate some of the honey and had a delicious snack. (Judges 14:5-9)
3. Samson fell in love and married a Philistine woman.

Answer: True

The Israelites usually married one of their relatives, but Samson had other ideas. Samson's mom and dad didn't want him to marry one of the Philistines because they had been very mean to God's people. However Samson loved the Philistine woman and married her anyway.

The wedding was a time of celebration, but things changed when Samson told the Philistines a riddle. He told them if they guessed it he would give them several fine coats, but if they didn't guess it they would have to pay him. The Philistines threatened Samson's wife and she told them the answer to Samson's riddle. Samson was so mad he left the party and his wife. The Philistines gave his wife to another man. (Judges 14:10-20)
4. Samson got very angry when the Philistines mistreated him. What animals did he use to set all their farms and fields on fire?

Answer: foxes

Samson was treated very badly by the Philistines and wanted revenge. He captured three hundred foxes and set their tails on fire. When he set the foxes free they ran into the fields on fire and burned everything in their path. The Philistines were really angry because it burned their fields, their vineyards, and many other things. (Judges 15:1-5)
5. The Philistines tried to capture Samson, but Samson always got strength from the Spirit of God. What unusual object did Samson use to kill a thousand Philistines?

Answer: a jawbone of a donkey

Samson made the Philistines so angry the Israelites were afraid. They told Samson they had to tie him up and give him to the Philistines as a prisoner. When the Philistines came, the Spirit of God came upon him. He broke the ropes and grabbed the first thing he found, the jawbone of a donkey. With the donkey's bone Samson killed one thousand Philistines.

Afterwards God provided water for him to drink. (Judges 15:9-20)
6. One night the Philistines tried to capture Samson by locking him in a city. What did Samson do to the city gates?

Answer: He carried them on his shoulders.

Samson went to a city to visit a woman. While he was there, the Philistines decided to trap him in the city by locking the city gates. They wanted to kill Samson in the morning. However during the night, when Samson was ready to leave, he picked up the city gates (locks, doors, and all), and carried them on his shoulders.

He set them on a nearby hill. The Philistines were angry when they realized Samson had escaped again. (Judges 16:1-3)
7. Samson fell in love with a woman named Delilah and Delilah wanted to know the secret of his strength. Which one of these is not a lie that Samson told her?

Answer: If she fed him lots of Arabian chocolate he would be sick.

Delilah wanted to know the secret of Samson's strength because the Philistines were paying her to capture Samson.

Samson told Delilah many lies about his strength and each time Delilah used them.

He told her if she tied him up with bowstrings, he would be helpless. Delilah did, but when the Philistines came to capture Samson, He broke the bowstrings and attacked them.

Samson told Delilah if she tied him up with new ropes, he would be weak and unable to defend himself. Delilah did, but when the Philistines came, Samson snapped the ropes like string. He won again.

Samson told Delilah if she wove his hair into a loom (which was an object used to make cloth and rugs), he would be weak. Delilah did. When the Philistines came Samson broke the loom and fought the Philistines again.

Delilah was very angry! (Judges 16:6-16)
8. Samson finally told Delilah the truth, that his strength was because of a vow he kept with God. What horrible thing did the Philistines do when they captured Samson?

Answer: They made him blind.

Samson told Delilah that he had kept a vow to God to never cut his hair. It was a symbol that he was dedicated to God. God honored that vow by giving him strength.

When Samson went to sleep, Delilah took out her scissors and cut his hair. When the Philistines arrived to capture Samson, Samson got up to fight them but his strength was gone. God did not help him because Samson's vow had been broken.

The Philistines took Samson and made him blind. Then they made Samson work in their prisons grinding wheat. Samson was powerless. (Judges 16:15-22)
9. The Philistines had a party and brought the defeated Samson out to make fun of him. What did Samson do during the party?

Answer: He prayed for God to help him.

Samson was humiliated and treated very badly during the party. The Philistines made fun of him and mocked God.

Samson cried to God and asked God to give him strength one more time. He prayed, "Dear God, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines for my two eyes."

God listened. (Judges 16:23-28)
10. What happened at the party that killed Samson and the Philistines?

Answer: Samson pushed the pillars over and the temple collapsed.

Samson was blind, but during the party he asked to be led to where the temple pillars were. With his last breath he prayed for God to let him die with the Philistines. He pushed the pillars over and the temple collapsed, killing everyone there.

After Samson died, his family came and buried him. Samson killed more Philistines the night he died than he did in his entire life. (Judges 16:24-31)
