From "Family Matters" (1989-1998), we meet the Winslow family. The parents are policeman Carl and his wife Harriette, who first appeared on "Perfect Strangers". Their children are Eddie and Laura. Anyone still remember sister Judy who disappeared in season four? Reginald VelJohnson and JoMarie Payton play the father and mother.
2. Phil and Claire
Answer: Dunphy
"Modern Family", which began in 2009, depicts an extended family with Jay Pritchett as the patriarch. Jay's daughter Claire married real estate salesman Phil Dunphy and they have three children, i.e., Haley, Alex and Luke. Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen play the Dunphys.
3. George and Lucille
Answer: Bluth
The wacky sitcom "Arrested Development" originally aired from 2003 to 2006. It features the dysfunctional Bluth family of George and Lucille and their offspring, Gob, Michael, Lindsay and Buster. Jeffrey Tambor is George Bluth, Sr. (before "Transparent") and Jessica Walter is Lucille.
4. Randy and Sharon
Answer: Marsh
Randy and Sharon Marsh exist in the animated world of "South Park". "South Park", the creation of Trey Parker and Matt Stone, is about four preteens living in Colorado. The show first aired in 1997 and the plots are extremely bizarre. One of the four protagonists (arguably the sanest) is Stan Marsh. Stan's parents are Randy and Sharon, and his abusive sister is Shelly. Trey Parker voices Stan.
5. Walter and Skyler
Answer: White
Taking a major turn from sitcoms, we have the wonderful series "Breaking Bad" which ran from 2008 to 2013. Walter is a high school chemistry teacher who discovers he has inoperable lung cancer. In order to provide for his wife Skyler, his disabled son Walter, Jr. and new baby Holly, Walter begins manufacturing and selling methamphetamine. Bryan Cranston is remarkable as the conflicted Walter.
6. Jock and Ellie
Answer: Ewing
If you were old enough in the 1980s, chances are you watched "Dallas". The nighttime soap opera ran from 1978 to 1991, and had everyone asking the question "Who shot J.R.?" The Ewing patriarch was Jock who lived at Southfork Ranch with his wife Ellie and their three sons, J.R., Gary (who moved to "Knots Landing") and youngest son Bobby. It depicted the machinations of Texas oil barons.
7. Jack and Norma
Answer: Arnold
"What would you do if I sang out of tune?" was the opening song on "The Wonder Years", the wonderful coming-of-age series set in the 1960s and 1970s. The show featured the Arnolds, a relatively average family during turbulent times. Jack was the bread-winner and his wife was the patient care-giver.
They had three kids, i.e., Karen, Wayne and Kevin (the protagonist). It ran from 1988 to 1993.
8. Phillip and Vivian
Answer: Banks
Phillip and Vivian Banks had three kids, Hilary, Carlton and Ashley; if they don't sound familiar that's because none of them was the star of the show. The show was "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" with Will Smith playing...Will Smith. Will was a poor kid from Philadelphia sent by his mother to live with his rich relatives in Bel-Air. The show aired from 1990 to 1996.
9. Jason and Maggie
Answer: Seaver
Psychologist Jason Seaver and his journalist wife (finally we had a working mother) lived on Long Island, New York. They had to contend with the difficulties of raising their kids, Mike, Carol and Ben (and later Chrissy). Sort of a modern "Father Knows Best", the problems were always solvable as long as they had each other. The show ran from 1985 to 1992.
10. Steven and Elyse
Answer: Keaton
The comedy on "Family Ties" came from the differences between liberal parents Steven and Elyse and their extremely conservative son, Alex. Steven ran a public radio station, while Elyse was an architect (another working mom). They had three kids, i.e., Alex, Mallory and Jennifer (and later Andy).
The show introduced us to young Republican Alex P. Keaton, played by Michael J. Fox. "Family Ties" aired from 1982 to 1989.
